For nearly two years DMPís Tom Jung has been using DSDô as the technology of choice for the labelís new recordings. With each new project Jung says it becomes more obvious that 1-bit technology is vastly superior to the current PCM method of converting music into the world of zeros and ones.Jung is no stranger to the advancement of digital recording technology having first worked with 3M on the development of a 2-channel machine more than 20 years ago. A few years later when the CD was introduced as a consumer format, DMP released ""Tricycle"" by Flim & The BBís that served as a landmark high-end audio demonstration disc. Since 1990, Jung has been squeezing every bit of musical reality he can out of various 20 to 24-bit digital systems.""When I had the opportunity to hear DSD in its prototype stages three years ago, I knew right away that this technology had the potential of delivering sonic reality,"" says Jung, who has since captured several recordings in both DSD and 24-bit/96kHz PCM for comparison purposes. ""All of the 24-bit/96kHz recordings I have heard and recorded sound like good digital recordings, while DSD sounds to me like the analog source.""Musicians that Jung has recorded with DSD agree. When guitarist Joe Beck and flutist Ali Ryerson heard the first playback of their recording ""Alto"" in the studio control room, the duo simultaneously responded by saying that the playback sounded exactly like it did in the studio. One prominent woodwind player with the New York Metropolitan Opera commented after listening to one of DMPís new SACD recordings, ""with this new technology, the fundamentals are finally in tune with the harmonics."" This, Junk explains, is due to the fact that DSD does not exhibit the high frequency phase shift and group delay inherent in all PCM systems. To date DMP DSD recordings include Joe Beck * Ali Ryerson - ""Alto,"" The Steve Davis Project - ""Quality Of Silence, Manfredo Fest - ""Just Jobim,"" The Stockholm Jazz Orchestra ""Tango"" and to be released Gaudiamus - ""Sacred Feast.""For more information, contact Jean Duffield at tj@dmprecords.com.
