Local Channel Reception Via Satellite Expected To Ignite Even Greater Sales Activity For New RCA DirecTV Receiver Systems

With local television channel reception via satellite nearing reality (contingent on federal government approval), Thomson Consumer Electronics is preparing to introduce two new RCA DirecTV receiver systems that will enable consumers in major metropolitan markets across the U.S, to access network broadcasts. The local-into-local satellite option must first be approved by Congress, which is now considering comprehensive satellite legislation that would permit satellite broadcasters such as DirecTV to carry local market stations. The local service also requires approval by the Federal Communications Commission. With the exception of New York and Los Angeles residents, local channel reception will require a new satellite receiver and an elliptical-shaped 18-inch x 24-inch dish/antenna (compared to the standard oval-shaped 8-inch wide dish). DirecTV plans to deliver local broadcast network channels by satellite to approximately 50 million homes, or about half of the nation's television households. ""Currently selling at a record pace, we anticipate even stronger RCA DirecTV unit sales results once consumers have access to local channel reception,"" said Thomson's David Spomer, Vice President - DBS Product Management. ""Our research indicates that local programming is one of the most sought-after options for consumers considering the purchase of these systems."" Earlier this year, Thomson announced the shipment of its six-millionth RCA DirecTV system to a retail customer, continuing a trend of astounding growth in the home satellite category that started when the first RCA brand system was introduced in 1994. Starting in October, Thomson will offer two next-generation RCA DirecTV systems with built-in Local Channel Reception capability (where available) and over 200 channels of DirecTV programming. The DS4440RE system (suggested retail price $399) comes with the DSA8900E 18-inch x 24-inch dish/antenna featuring two dual LNBs for connection to multiple TVs. This allows for programming reception from DirecTV satellites in two different orbital slots. The DRD480RE stand-alone receiver offers Local Channel Reception capability, a UHF/IR universal remote control, plus DolbyÆ Digital audio capability. Viewers who wish to experience 5.1-channel Dolby Digital sound for maximum home theatre entertainment may do so by connecting a Dolby Digital receiver or surround processor/amplifiers and external speakers. In addition to the full complement of standard features, the two new RCB DirecTV receiver models will offer WinkÆ Enhanced Broadcasting capability for interactive functions; Picture Guide, a video window in the Enhanced Program Guide that enables viewers to watch current programming while searching through additional guide information; and Caller ID Display capability which can display on the TV screen the telephone number and name of the caller during an incoming phone call.
