1-Apr-00

The Large Format Cinema Association (LFCA) and Eastman Kodak Company will honor Sean MacLeod Phillips with the annual Kodak Vision Award for Large Format Cinematography, to be presented at the LFCA 2000 Conference and Large Format Film Festival, May 17-20, 2000 in Los Angeles, California. The award ceremony takes place the evening of Wednesday, May 17, at the California Science Center following the LFCA 2000 opening reception. Sean Phillips is a noted director, cinematographer, stereographer and visual effects expert who has played a vital part in the making of many large format feature films, including three groundbreaking 3D achievements: ""Siegfried & Roy: The Magic Box"" (Visual Effects Supervisor and DP); ""T-Rex: Back To The Cretaceous"" (Visual Effects Supervisor) and ""Encounter In The Third Dimension"" (Co-Producer and DP). His 2D large format film credits include ""Ring Of Fire"", ""Special Effects"" and ""Thrill Ride: The Science Of Fun"". He has also worked on a variety of ride films and specialty films, and has distinguished himself in TV commercials and 35mm features. A creative leader in the application of digital production techniques to large format, Phillips' strength has been in fusing cutting-edge visual effects with film's oldest appeal: the emotional bond felt between the people in the audience and the people on the screen. ""Sean Phillips is a photographic wizard and an innovator. He's created some of the most compelling images in large format today. He's a model for our industry,"" says LFCA President Christopher Reyna. Phillips holds a degree in Cinema/Television from the University of Southern California. His student films won many awards, including an Achievement Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The Kodak Vision award recognizes vision, imagination and leadership in filmmaking. It has been awarded to cinematographers, producers and filmmakers whose work embodies artistic achievement and a commitment to excellence. LFCA and Kodak presented the first Kodak Vision Award for Large Format Cinematography in 1999, posthumously to Noel Archambault. Phillips will attend the award ceremony, which will include tributes from colleagues and a number of film clips.
