DIRECTV, Inc., a unit of Hughes Electronics Corporation, announced its high-power DIRECTVÆ digital satellite television service acquired 160,000 net new customers in March. DIRECTVís March additions represent a record for that month and a 33 percent increase in net customer acquisitions over March 1999, its previous record March. An additional 105,000 customers were transitioned to DIRECTV from medium-power PRIMESTAR By DIRECTV last month. Through the first three months of 2000, DIRECTV has acquired 405,000 new high-power customers, representing a record first quarter and a 33 percent increase over the first quarter of 1999. DIRECTV now has more than 8.3 million customers, including customers subscribing to the medium-power PRIMESTAR By DIRECTV service. DIRECTV continued to transition PRIMESTAR By DIRECTV customers to high-power service in March. The 105,000 customers transitioned to high-power service in March - which are not included in the 160,000 net new customers acquired by DIRECTV last month - brings the total number of conversions to 745,000. At the end of March, PRIMESTAR By DIRECTV had approximately one million customers subscribing to its medium-power service.
