Miller & Kriesel Professional further solidifies its position as a leading innovator of 5.1 audio monitoring solutions with the introduction of several products that uniquely address the high-resolution monitoring needs of the broadcast and post production arenas. These products made their debut at the 2000 NAB show in Las Vegas, Nevada, April 10-13, 2000. With the advent of HDTV and digital video, 5.1-channel audio production is beginning to gain momentum within the broadcast, video, production and post-production arenas. M&K Pro again raises the bar by introducing new products that provide additional solutions for audio professionals who require the level of precision necessary to allow for seamless translation of 5.1 audio into all playback environments, up to and including consumers' homes. The new products making their debut at the 2000 NAB show include the LFE-5 Bass Management Controller with 6-channel volume control, the MPS-5420 and MPS-5320 Backfireô Powered Subwoofers, and the MPS-1625P and MPS-2525P Powered Tripoleô Surround Monitors. Designed for all audio formats and applications, from mono through 7.1 channels and beyond, M&K Pro systems provide users with complete, packaged solutions for monitoring in spaces ranging from desktops to large control rooms. ""As the broadcast and post production industries move into the era of digital video and HDTV, 5.1 has become the complimentary audio format of choice,"" says M&K Co-Founder and noted audio pioneer Ken Kreisel. ""Just as technological innovation now allows us to deliver a brilliant picture quality that was never before possible, we also have the ability now to produce multi-channel audio of equal brilliance. ""For more than 25 years, I have worked on developing monitoring solutions to allow the production of audio of the highest possible resolution. Our current products deliver these 5.1 channel solutions for a wide range of production and playback environments. These leading-edge M&K Pro products push the technology curve to allow for the creation of audio with quality equivalent to the best visual sources."" M&K Professional systems are currently found in some of the world's most renowned video, film, music and broadcast production and post-production facilities, including Skywalker Sound, George Lucas's JAK Productions, Twentieth Century Fox, Sony Pictures, Universal Pictures, 5.1 Entertainment Group, 4MC, and Fotokem, among many others. Kreisel notes, ""I have spent nearly ten years involved in 5.1-channel audio - from working with format developers such as DolbyÆ to making my own 5.1 channel recordings, as well as working with numerous cutting-edge 5.1 recording and post-production facilities. This experience puts M&K Pro in a unique position to help educate broadcast and post production sectors on the benefits of 5.1. In the long term, I hope that today's technologies will ultimately alter the whole paradigm of how these industries view the very nature of audio."" LFE-5 Bass-Management Controller Bass management is a critical element necessary for the accurate monitoring of multi-channel audio, as well as a necessity for any monitoring system that uses a subwoofer. Because bass management is often misunderstood and sometimes not utilized in 5.1-channel monitoring systems, M&K has become a powerful advocate for education on the proper use of bass management, thanks in part to its nearly 25 years of experience in designing bass management systems. The second-generation LFE-5 Bass Management Controller uniquely addresses several needs for audio monitoring in facilities not presently fully configured for 5.1-channel audio. These features include a six-channel volume control with wired remote capabilities, mute switches for each channel, as well as for the entire system, an LFE input gain switch for +10 or 0dB monitoring or mixing of either Dolby Digital or DTSÆ, and a stereo/mono surround switch that feeds the right surround channel input and feeds it to both surround channels for easy SVA/Dolby surround monitoring. For monitoring SDDS, or any format with more than 5.1 channels, two LFE-5s can be combined. Like its LFE-4 predecessor, the LFE-5 features five precision 80Hz high-pass filters with a matching 80Hz low-pass filter to route low frequency information to one or more subwoofers. MPS-2525P And MPS-1625P Powered Tripole Surrounds The MPS-2525P and 1625P are the first tri-amplified, self-powered Tripole Surround loudspeakers (150 Watts to the woofers, 100 Watts to the tweeters and 100 Watts to the side drivers). This new M&K Pro design enables studios to have a fully powered monitoring system with M&K's proprietary Tripole technology. The MPS-2525P is designed to match the MPS-2510P in output, timbre and overall sound quality; and the MPS-1625P is designed to match the MPS-1610 main monitor. The MPS-2525P possesses the same drivers on its front baffle as the MPS-2510P: three 1-inch soft-dome Ferrofluid tweeters and two polypropylene 5.25-inch woofer drivers. Additionally, the speaker is equipped with two 3.25-inch mid-tweeter drivers on each side baffle, which compose the dipole elements. The MPS-1625P has one 1-inch soft-dome Ferrofluid tweeter and one ultra-high-performance 6.5-inch polypropylene woofer on its front baffle, as well as two 3.25-inch mid-tweeter drivers on each side baffle. M&K Proís proprietary Tripole surround speaker design delivers both imaging specificity and enveloping sound qualities, as it is essentially two speakers in one cabinet. With the flick of a switch on a remote switcher, users may compare the Tripole mode to the sound of a direct radiating speaker or to the sound of a dipole. With this unique feature, engineers can now evaluate how their mixes will sound when played back on direct radiating, dipole, or an array of surround speakers. MPS-5420 And MPS-5410 Backfire Subwoofers Sound mixers unaccustomed to using subwoofers in their monitoring systems often question where the subwoofer should be located in the listening environment. M&K Pro's Backfire subwoofer design resolves this question by placing the drivers directly against a wall for maximum coupling and loading to the room, providing the flattest frequency response and highest output. The ultra high-output MPS-5420 Backfire 400-Watt amplified subwoofer and MPS-5410 350-Watt amplified subwoofer establish new benchmarks for subwoofer technology and make any monitoring system truly full range. Both utilize M&K Professional's unique Backfire design, which allows them to be placed directly against a wall for maximum coupling and loading, while providing extremely flat in-room frequency response (to frequencies below 20Hz). The MPS-5420 and MPS-5410 feature Miller & Kreisel Professional's proprietary Push-Pull Driver (two 12-inch woofers) technology to virtually eliminate even-order harmonic distortion - revealing low-frequency details that are often masked by other subwoofers. Both units also feature M&K Professional's Headroom Maximizer Circuit, which lets the full uncompressed dynamics of the mix to be heard up to the subwoofer's capacity while preventing amplifier clipping and distortion. About M&K Professional Miller & Kreisel Professional Sound Corp., located in Culver City, California, has been a pioneer in the development of high-end loudspeakers and subwoofers for both home and studio environments since 1974.
