Miller & Kreisel Sound, Inc. (M&K) has launched a new series of ultra high-performance Prosumer monitors based on its M&K Professional product line. The first three speakers in the new line are the S-250 main monitor, the Surround-200 and Surround-250 Tripoleô.Adapting new technology and innovations, the three new speakers complement the previously-introduced S-150P THXÆ active monitor to create this eagerly-anticipated Prosumer Series. The S-250 main speaker ($1,399 each) is a very-high output reference-quality monitor designed for very high-end home theatres, particularly those in very large rooms. It is also ideal for listeners who require extremely high playback levels.Derived from M&K Professionalís MPS-2550 main monitor, this speaker utilizes M&Kís signature front-baffle configuration of three 1-inch soft-dome tweeters and two 5 1/4-inch polypropylene mid-woofers. This configuration is also found on the M&K S-150, S-150P active monitor, and the MPS-2510 and MPS-2510P professional monitors. The S-250 adds to this front-baffle driver complement a total of two 6.5-inch woofers, with one located on each side baffle of the cabinet. These 6.5-inch drivers operate over a narrow frequency range - from below the recommended crossover frequency of 80Hz to about 200Hz, above which they roll off. This design allows the speaker to produce considerably higher SPL than the S-150/MPS-2510, with an extremely wide dynamic range. The S-250 uses M&Kís exclusive Phase-Focused crossover, which is computer-designed to ensure a very smooth response over a wide horizontal and vertical listening window. While other crossover designers consider just frequency response on one axis (the sweet spot), M&K considers the speaker's response in both the time and frequency domains, at a very wide range of angles in both the vertical and horizontal planes, optimizing the speaker's three-dimensional response. In virtually any location in the room, listeners will hear superior imaging and sound quality, with remarkable clarity both on and off axis. The Surround-200 ($1,999/pr.) and Surround-250 ($1,399 each) Tripole Surround Speakers follow the incredible success of M&Kís SS-150 Tripole and bring the performance of the finest multichannel recording studios into high-end home theatres. In comparison to the SS-150, these models deliver increased output capability, especially in the low frequencies, in a somewhat larger package. The Surround-200's driver complement includes a very high-performance 6.5-inch woofer (the same driver used in M&Kís reference S-5000THX THX Ultra main monitor) and M&Kís 1-inch soft-dome tweeter on the front baffle, plus a total of four 3.25-inch polypropylene drivers for the dipole elements (two on each side baffle). With the same front-baffle driver complement as the S-150 and S-250, the Surround-250 is for those enthusiasts that want their surround speakers to be an exact match to their front speakers. Its driver complement includes dual high-performance 5.25-inch woofers and three M&Kís 1-inch soft-dome tweeters on the front baffle, plus a total of four 3.25-inch polypropylene drivers for the dipole elements (two on each side baffle). The Surround-250 is the ultimate surround speaker for those whose home theaters can accommodate its size.M&Kís exclusive Tripole design is conceived specifically for playback of any and all surround material, including Dolby Digital, DTSÆ, DVD-Audio, Dolby Digital Surround EXô, and derived 7.1, as well as ProLogicÆ and enhanced music mode sources. The Tripole operates as if it is two speakers: first a near-ideal point source direct radiator (on its front baffle), with an M&K Phase-Focused crossover feeding the front baffle drivers. The second is a dipole speaker using a total of four high-performance 3.25-inch poly mid-tweeters. These drivers achieve a very smooth and transparent sound from 300Hz through the critical midrange and above, due in part to the fact they operate without any midrange crossover (meaning optimum phase and sonic coherency). As a result, when the listener walks around a room where the Tripoles are operating, the quality of the surround channels remains remarkably consistent, with good imaging and spatiality in virtually any room location. To achieve this effect, the system was designed so that when the listenerís ears move off of the direct axis of sound produced by the closest speaker baffle, they move into the direct sound field of one of the other baffles. When the directional and timbre characteristics of the speaker are virtually the same in various room locations, this means excellent coverage for listeners regardless of where they sit in the room. The Tripoleís imaging coherency is optimized for placement ranging up to two feet above or two feet below the listenerís ears (0 to +24dB). M&Kís Tripole design can be operated in any one of eight different modes that vary the ratios of output from the direct radiating front baffle drivers and the side dipole drivers. These modes can be selected through the use of a separate remote speaker switcher. The S-250 dimensions are 12.5 H x 10.5 W x 14 D inches and it weighs 32lbs. The Surround-200 dimensions are 12.6 H x 10.5 W x 8 D inches, with a weight of 14lbs; while the Surround-250 measures 12.5 H x 10.5 W x 12 D inches and weighs 26lbs.Headquartered in Culver City, California, M&K has been a pioneering leader in the fields of high-end loudspeakers and subwoofers for the home and studio environments and both analog and digital audiophile recording since 1974.
