recordLab Corp.'s digital audio recording software, Internet TapeDeck, is available as a free download from www.recordlab.com. Geared towards amateur musicians and home recordists, the application is said to emulate the basic recording functions of a hardware-based recorder costing several hundred dollars or more. ""The idea for TapeDeck is to be that platform for both people that have never done (multi-track recording) before, and as a working tool... for the more experienced person,"" said Brian Ollodi, General Manager of Internet Products and Services for recordLab. Internet TapeDeck features simultaneous playback and recording of up to eight tracks, punch-in/punch-out capability and a three-band equalizer on each track. While the software includes recordLab's Reverb DirectX Plug-in at no charge, Ollodi said another dozen or so plug-in effects will be available to users at a cost of $10-$30 each. ""At the same time, (Internet TapeDeck) will support any 'well-behaved'"" DirectX plug-in effect, he noted. recordLab's plug-ins are being licensed from 3Com Corp., and will include such effects as echo, compression, multi-band EQ, chorus, phaser and harmonizer. Currently, Internet TapeDeck is a PC-only application, but Ollodi said a Mac version ""is on the drawing board."" Internet TapeDeck allows users to link directly to over 300 instructional articles on the recordLab Web site, many of which are accompanied by audio and video tutorials. And soon, said Ollodi, recordLab plans to offer pay-per-view classes, the first of which is being taped now at the University of California at Los Angeles.Source: Pro Sound News
