DIRECTV, Inc., a unit of Hughes Electronics Corporation, announced its high-power DIRECTVÆ digital satellite television service acquired 142,000 net new customers in June, a record for that month. An additional 140,000 customers were transitioned to DIRECTV from medium-power PRIMESTAR By DIRECTV last month. Through the first six months of 2000, DIRECTV has acquired 857,000 new high-power customers, a 28 percent increase over the same year period in 1999. ""With local channels now available in 27 markets, we are experiencing accelerating growth in our core urban and suburban markets,"" said Odie Donald, President of DIRECTV, Inc. ""This month we are enabling retailers to offer new customers professional installation for $49 or less, and in August we will launch a national acquisition offer for NFL SUNDAY TICKETô, our most popular sports subscription package. Coupled with the forthcoming launch of new interactive and enhanced TV services in the third and fourth quarters, we have every reason to be bullish about our growth going forward.""
