Texas Instruments (TI) announced that over one million moviegoers have now seen all-digital feature movies projected by TIís innovative DLP Cinemaô technology. ""This is a significant landmark,"" said Doug Darrow, Business Manager for DLP Cinema. ""Only a year or so ago, no one outside the movie industry had seen an all-digital presentation. Now, more than a million people have had the opportunity to see what we believe is the future of cinema. Best of all, the reaction we have had has been incredibly enthusiastic - we receive numerous e-mails and calls each day from those who have seen DLP Cinema in action, and virtually all of them congratulate us on what weíre doing."" ""In fact,"" he continued, ""in those locations where movie-goers have had the opportunity to choose between a film-based showing and a DLP Cinema showing, they have chosen the DLP Cinema showing because of its cleaner, more consistent image quality."" The current program of field demonstrations of DLP Cinema prototype projectors - sponsored by Texas Instruments, Technicolor, several major studios and participating exhibitors - is designed to show the industry and the movie-going public the benefits of TIís all-digital projection technology. The audience gets a better picture which is rock solid, free of dirt, scratches and degradation - the theatre operator can learn about and influence the eventual digital presentation system - the studio can develop the production expertise to distribute a digital feature - and the creative has more tools to control the final look of the movie, ensuring a consistent presentation every time it is shown. ""Today, the DLP Cinema Field Demonstration Program encompasses thirty-one screens and sixteen different exhibitors in ten countries around the world,"" said Brooke Williams, Marketing Manager for DLP Cinema, ""and has featured no fewer than nine all-digital movies from three major studios. Itís been a tremendous success. Weíre confident that weíll be announcing our five millionth movie-goer within the next year."" ""Earlier this year,"" continued Doug Darrow, ""we signed agreements with Barco, Christie Inc. and Imax Corporation under the terms of which those companies will develop all-digital cinema projectors using DLP Cinema technology. The next logical step for the Worldwide DLP Cinema Field Demonstration Program would see those companies taking an increasingly active part as their new products reach market-readiness in the coming months."" DLP Cinema technology is Digital Light Processingô technology specifically adapted for the needs of the movie industry. By comparison with the industry-leading large venue DLPô technology-based projectors on which it is based, it features even higher contrast, together with color processing designed to replicate the visual experience of film - commercial projectors featuring DLP technology are designed primarily for video and graphics applications. At the heart of TI's DLP Cinema technology are three Digital Micromirror Deviceô optical semiconductor chips. The DMDô switch has an array of to 1,310,000 hinged, microscopic mirrors which operate as optical switches to create a high resolution, full color image. Today, TI supplies DLP subsystems to more than thirty of the world's top projector manufacturers, who then design, manufacture and market DLP technology-based projectors. There are now over fifty products featuring DLP technology in the market. Since early 1996, over 350,000 DLP subsystems have been shipped. Over the past four years, DLP technology-based projectors have consistently won some of the audio-visual industryís most prestigious awards. Texas Instruments Incorporated is the world leader in digital signal processing and analog technologies, the semiconductor engines of the Internet age. The companyís businesses also include materials and controls, and educational and productivity solutions. TI is headquartered in Dallas, Texas and has manufacturing or sales operations in more than 25 countries. Texas Instruments is traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol TXN.
