Mitsubishi Electronics Introduces Largest HD Big Screen With Digital Light Processingô Technology

Retail Debut Of WD-65000 Marks New Era In Multimedia Entertainment

25-Aug-00

Mitsubishi Digital Electronics America, Inc. (MDEA) introduced the largest big-screen, high definition-upgradeable projection television using Digital Light Processingô technology. Called the WD-65000, its screen measures 65 inches, making it the largest television with DLPô technology ever produced. The WD-65000 goes on sale to consumers at the end of August at Paul's TV, La Habra, Southern California, and represents the first retail sale of a high definition-upgradeable television based on DLP technology. The WD-65000 represents the first time DLP technology has been available to the consumer market in HD rear-projection form. Until now, the technology has been used principally in the movie industry and for other professional projection needs. The superior resolution qualities of DLP technology are particularly important for projecting computer images and similar high-resolution graphics. With the potential to provide a full 720p x 1280 HD grade image, MDEA anticipates the WD-65000 will be well positioned for the convergence of television programming, computer video and other image sources onto home television screens. ""The WD-65000 represents a revolution in terms of multimedia entertainment and functionality,"" said Max Wasinger, Vice President, Sales and Marketing, MDEA. ""This product can handle multiple content with ease. Not only will our customers be able to watch high definition television programming in their homes, they also will be able to display graphics from PCs, video and other Internet content at a level of performance that doesn't exist anywhere else."" DLP technology creates a high definition image using almost one million micro-mirrors on a chip to switch red, green and blue light to form an image. When incorporated into a big screen television, the result is the ability to display both HD images and high-resolution graphics without any of the compromises found with traditional display technology. DLP imaging delivers advantages in resolution, reliability and form factor that are unsurpassed by other consumer television technologies. Along with providing the superior visual quality characteristic of digital technology, the other advantages of the WD-65000 television are numerous and include: - Outstanding graphics performance - Compact and elegant styling (WD-65000 measures four inches less in depth than other rear-projection technology from Mitsubishi) - The ability to display static images for long periods of time without concern for uneven phosphor aging that could leave a permanent image on CRT based systems ""Home entertainment just took a giant step forward,"" said Robert Perry, Director of Marketing, MDEA. ""Video enthusiasts are going to be impressed with the quality they'll get from the combination of DLP technology and our 65-inch screen. Families won't have to huddle around computer screens to play video games - now they can enjoy them from the comfort of their favorite chairs. Switching to the PC source connected to the Internet, a stock watcher can tune in to his favorite HDTV program on the large screen while following the ups and downs of his stock portfolio."" ""Regardless of the image source, this DLP-based television rapidly translates all video content into a digital image for display in the blink of an eye,"" says Perry. ""DLP technology makes images sparkle with the clarity and realism of a freshly washed window."" The improved clarity found in display systems enabled by DLP technology is a product of the advanced micro-mirror design that ensures that each picture element (pixel) of the incoming video image is properly displayed on an individual pixel. This precise presentation of individual pixels provides edge definition, crispness and sharp bold images that may have appeared soft or muddied on other technologies. ""DLP technology is recognized as one of the most significant technological advances in projection television displays since the introduction of the CRT,"" said Tom Fulbright, Marketing and Business Development Manager, Texas Instruments. ""Once a person experiences the DLP image on a big screen television, there's no turning back. The clarity is unbelievable. And fortunately, in today's highly technical, but time-strained culture, the WD-65000 is extremely easy to use."" The WD-65000 offers a broad array of inputs for a wide variety of sources, from HDTV receivers to computers, even for a camera in the baby's room to keep an eye on the little one. The WD-65000 retails for $15,000 and will be available at selected television and electronic retail stores nationwide beginning in a few weeks. Mitsubishi Digital Electronics America, Inc.
