THOMSON multimedia (NYSE: TMS) announced plans to ship its first dual tray audio CD recorder/rewriter this fall. The unit allows consumers to create their own digital audio recordings from both digital and analog sources. ""Consumers have a strong desire to make their own digital recordings, as evidenced by the success of the RCA LYRA digital audio player,"" stated Mark Redmond, Vice President, Worldwide Audio Products, Thomson. ""The RCA CD recorder offers several innovative features that provide flexibility and creativity,"" he added.Model RCA CDRW121, with a suggested retail price of $499, can record from external analog or digital devices and is compatible with audio CD-R or CD-RW media. The new CD recorder/rewriter is a full-featured unit that even allows copies of High Definition Compact Discs (HDCD). Recordings can be made from all sources with a 44.1 kHz sampling rate that provides for accurate recording quality. The dual tray unit dubs digitally at 2x from deck to deck and 1x from external sources. It also incorporates CD Sync, which eliminates false starts at the beginning of the recording. Bit rate conversion from 32kHz, 44.1kHz and 48kHz is also included. The RCA model CDRW121 offers several features that enables users to personalize the recorded discs. DJ mode not only allows pause-free consecutive play between drawers, but its live effect aspect allows users to add fades and sound effects such as cheering and clapping - to simulate a live performance feel. If the CD includes the new CD text feature, the CDRW121 will record this information as well. Consumers can also sing along while playing, using the two microphone inputs, one of which has a level control. For easy connection to a variety of sources, the RCA CDRW121 has several sets of both analog and digital inputs and outputs. It will be available in September.About THOMSON multimediaWith sales of 6.7 billion Euros (U.S. $6.5 billion) in 1999 and 55,000 employees in more than 30 countries, THOMSON multimedia is the worldís fourth largest producer of consumer electronics.
