DolbyÆ Supports Fall Film Festivals 2000

1-Sep-00

In its continuing effort to promote the essential role of sound in the art of filmmaking, DolbyÆ Laboratories will support the Telluride, Toronto, New York, Jackson Hole, and Denver Film Festivals this fall. ""Dolbyís ongoing commitment to the highest standards in cinema sound and longstanding service to the worldís film festivals make this partnership of art and technology wonderfully rewarding to all those who love film,"" said Bill Jasper, President of Dolby Laboratories. Telluride Dolby is again the ""Sound of Telluride,"" for one of the worldís most prestigious film festivals, with its quality programming, intimate atmosphere and stunning Colorado mountain setting. Dolby is the exclusive sound sponsor of the 27th Annual Telluride Film Festival, held this year on Labor Day weekend, September 1-4. To ensure the best possible theatre sound, Dolby assists with engineering and technical support at the Festival. Russell Allen, Manager, Exhibitor Support from Dolbyís Los Angeles office, is the Festivalís Sound Director. With Bob Pinkston, Vice President, Exhibitor Relations, they have installed Dolby sound processors on all seven Festival screens, including the unique Abel Gance Outdoor Theater. New York As they have for the past 19 years, cinema engineers from Dolbyís New York office, under the direction of Vice President Michael Di Cosimo, will be on hand throughout the 38th annual New York Film Festival (September 22-October 8), to ensure high-quality sound and provide support to the Festival and its filmmakers. The New York Film Festival has three screening venues: Alice Tully Hall, which has a Dolby Digital processor installed; The Walter Reade Theatre, which features a Dolby Digital processor for special screenings and Avery Fisher Hall, home of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, which is transformed to a movie exhibition hall with Dolby cinema processors for opening and closing night screenings. Toronto Dolby engineers will equip and consult with staff at the venues for the 25th Annual Toronto Film Festival (September 7ñ16). This year, Dolbyís Director of East Coast Film and Broadcast Brad Hohle will assist with a high-definition digital cinema screening of ""Ivanís Ecstasy"" at the Varsity 8 venue, which will use Dolby E, the technology designed to ease the transition from two-channel to multichannel audio. Dolby E was first used in a digital cinema setting in 1999 for a ShowEast screening of ""Dogma."" Jackson Hole At the Jackson Hole Wildlife Film Festival Symposium, September 20-22, Dolbyís Steve Venezia, Manager, DVD/DTV Broadcast Support, will install the sound systems for the three theatrical venues, which include a large screen (16:9) room, and two smaller home theatre venues, all using Dolby Digital and Dolby E equipment. Additionally, Mr. Venezia will moderate the Symposiumís Sound Panel during the event. Beginning in 2001, Dolby will be on the Festival Board. Denver International Film Festival Dolby also sponsors the Denver International Film Festival, held October 12-18, presenting over 200 films. Opening and closing nights will be featured in the 3,000-seat Buell Theatre at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts. In addition to the aforementioned film festivals, Dolby Laboratories sponsors several others throughout the year, including the Cannes International Film Festival held in Cannes, France, in May and the Sundance Film Festival, in Park City, Utah, in January.
