Theta Launches Two-Channel Dreadnaught Module

21-Sep-00

Theta Digital, introduces a new a solid-state two-channel module for its Dreadnaught power amplifier at CEDIA EXPO 2000. Completely compatible with the existing Dreadnaught chassis and single-channel modules, the new two-channel module makes it possible for the Dreadnaught to generate up to ten channels of fully-balanced power amplification. Each channel of the Dreadnaught two-channel module delivers 100 watts at 8 ohms. With multichannel formats now exceeding the conventional 5.1 channels, a typical configuration in a home theatre environment might consist of three single-channel and two two-channel modules. The single channels drive the front left, right, and center channels and the two-channel modules power the left/right surrounds and left/right side channels, resulting in a seven-channel setup, not counting subwoofers. The new module extends the application opportunities of the Dreadnaught for multiroom use, providing audiophile-grade audio for whole house sound systems. Each Dreadnaught module has single-ended and balanced inputs for each channel, along with bus selection for stereo or surround modes. Output connectors are gold-plated binding posts, with a CE-approved version supplied to countries within the European Union. In addition, each channel on the two-channel module produces, like the Dreadnaughtís single-channel modules, a fully balanced output with either a balanced (XLR) input or a single-ended (RCA) input. Design Concepts The two-channel module is a direct descendant of the original Dreadnaught single-channel design, boasting its true-balanced configuration and zero global feedback design. A DC-servo has also been added to eliminate the manual adjustment of the DC offset of the amplifier outputs. Theta says that the module is based on a high quality FET-input circuit, employs a long time-constant and is highly buffered to preserve maximum audio quality. The Dreadnaught was designed to be modular and upgradable, The two-channel module is identical in size to the single-channel modules and fits into any of the Dreadnaughtís five slots. Starting with as few as two channels, a listener can have a qualified installer add or replace modules as his system or budget permits. Modules must be installed by authorized dealers, and can be done in about an hour. Power Supply The two-channel module takes full advantage of the Dreadnaughtís ""massive"" power supply, as well as the inherent channel-selective current capability of the Dreadnaughtís 2.2 KVA power transformer, which is common to all channels. Theta claims that the benefit of this approach is that any single channel confronted with a full-level signal will have the entire current capability of the transformer at its disposal. Theta says that in single-channel power tests, the power transformer does not limit the output power. Unless all modules are driven to full power, which isnít likely to occur in real-world situations, the channels not being driven hard effectively lend their portion of the transformer's power to the active channels. Each module also includes LEDs to indicate fuse and temperature conditions. The two-channel moduleís amplifier stage topologies are identical to the single-chassis module. The Dreadnaught two-channel module is available now at a suggested price of $1,000. For additional information about Theta Digital, visit the Web site at www.thetadigital.com. Category: Amplifiers
