Onkyo has introduced the company's first home theatre receiver to earn the prestigious THXÆ Select certification from Lucasfilm. The Onkyo TX-DS787 is also the only 6.1-channel THX Surround EXô receiver in the $1000 price class. It is compatible with DolbyÆ Digital and DTSÆ Digital Surroundô program material encoded for a rear center surround channel. The TX-DS787 also has a six-channel amplifier rated a 100 watts per channel into 8 ohms. With THX Surround EX, the Onkyo TX-DS787 provides a realistic 360-degree soundstage that places the movie or music lover right in the middle of the action. The audience is totally enveloped by the sonic ambience of the scene in front of them. Specific sounds can move around the room, and special effects such as flyovers are more realistic than with 5.1 systems. The system is also compatible with program materials encoded for DTS-ES Matrix 6.1.Designed with flexibility and ease-of-use in mind, the Onkyo TX-DS787 uses the Smart Scan Setup feature that allows simple, intuitive system set up and control. The receiver has connections for four video and four audio source components. These include one each for a turntable, CD player and tape deck, and one 7.1 multichannel input for future DVD-Audio players and other components. There are two optical and two coaxial digital inputs that can be assigned to any audio or audio/video source. There are line-level preamp outputs for all eight channels, including two back surrounds and a subwoofer. On the video side, there are S-Video and composite inputs for all four video sources, plus two assignable component video inputs , and one component video output. The video circuitry includes professional grade component video switching for excellent performance with HDTV systems. The Onkyo TX-DS787 has 96kHz/24-bit digital-to-analog converters (DACs) for high quality reproduction of Dolby Digital and DTS Digital Surround soundtracks and music. The dual 24-bit DSP processors use a non-scaling configuration. Onkyo's exclusive Optimum Gain Volume Control ensures that the low level signals are kept well above the noise floor for absolute signal purity, even on the quietest passages.Like all Onkyo receivers, the TX-DS787 uses the company's highly-regarded WRAT (Wide Range Amplifier Technology) to achieve flat power response from 10 to 100,000Hz. All six amplifier channels are rated at 100 watts per channel into an 8-ohm load with all channels driven, or 120 watts per channel into a 6-ohm load. This ability to drive all channels, which is so essential with Dolby Digital and DTS Digital Surround programming, derives from the receiver's massive power supply. It has a large heavy-duty transformer with low-ESR, high density stiffening capacitors. The amplifier topology provides for a low-impedance ground path and low negative feedback. The TX-DS787 is designed for two-zone use with preamplifier outputs for multi-room, multi-source operation - featuring dual-zone infrared remote inputs, an assignable 12V trigger and stereo speaker outputs for a second zone. The Onkyo TX-DS787 has an ergonomic learning macro remote control, with back lighting that makes it easy to read in the dark. The receiver has a black, anodized aluminum front panel and heavy-duty steel chassis. The Onkyo TX-DS787 is now available with a manufacturer's suggested retail price of $1,049.95.
