Acoustic Research Introduces Phantom Subwoofer

9-Oct-00

Acoustic Research has added a subwoofer to its Phantom line of loudspeakers. The new model debuted at CEDIA EXPO 2000 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Like its full-range siblings, introduced last year, the new AR's Cary Christie designed the Phantom Subwoofer. Christie has again used an innovative approach to develop an unusual loudspeaker. The footprint of the new sub is basically a triangle and it is intended to be placed in a corner, which increases its acoustic output by as much as 9dB. The sealed cabinet, made of Cubicon(c) and styled to match the extruded aluminum of the Phantom series, contains a single, front-firing 12-inch woofer and a 300-watt RMS (at 4 ohms) amplifier. It has a front-mounted control panel with an LED display that gives an easy-to-read visual indication of phase, level and EQ. The settings can be ""locked"" so that once set, they are not accidentally misadjusted. To eliminate distraction, the display can also be easily turned off. Centering on 30, 60 and 120Hz, the subwoofer output level can be adjusted by +/-3 dB in 1dB steps. Other features include 0 to 180-degree continuously variable phase control, variable crossover frequency from 40 to 200Hz, and an A/V switch that boosts the output 3dB with a 6dB/octave roll-off at 40 Hz. The Phantom Subwoofer is equipped with RCA jacks for the low level stereo and LFE inputs and with binding posts for the high level inputs. The sub's overall frequency response is 20 to 200Hz, +/-3dB. The subwoofer weighs 35lbs. The new Phantom Subwoofer is available this month and has a suggested retail price of $1,200. For further information, visit www.acoustic-research.com.
