Sony Disc Manufacturing Completes Expansion At Terre Haute, Indiana Facility

Sony Disc Manufacturing (SDM), the world's largest producer of pre-recorded optical discs, announced the completion of its DVD production expansion at the Terre Haute, Indiana facility. The expansion increases production by 96 million units per year and creates additional positions supporting the new production capabilities, enabling the facility to accommodate new customers. ""Projected disc demand for DVD-5, DVD-10 and DVD-9 is going through the roof,"" says Bob Hurley, Senior Vice President, Sales and Marketing. ""Because of our quick response to customer needs, our DVD manufacturing capability is exceeding 10 million per month at the Indiana facility. This is very exciting and great news for existing and potential customers."" The expansion includes twenty five DVD production lines, three cutting machines with double speed DVD-Video capabilities, three new screen printers and one offset printer, wrapping equipment and packaging automation. With additional capacity now available, SDM is aggressively pursuing custom DVD business, in addition to fulfilling DVD demand from Sony Music, Sony Pictures, Columbia Tri-Star Home Video and Sony Computer Entertainment's PlayStation2 product line. SDM is also reaching out to third-party customers in the areas of video entertainment, promotion and corporate training. DVD replication in the U.S. began July 1997 at Sony's Terre Haute, Indiana facility, which in 1984 was the first CD manufacturing facility in the U.S. Terre Haute is the second Sony facility to provide full DVD mastering and replication services, following the commencement of DVD manufacturing in January 1997 at the company's Shizuoka, Japan plant. In addition, Sony's Austrian facility currently produces up to 12 million DVDs per year and will expand its annual capacity to approximately 100 million DVDs this year. All locations feature Sony's latest full in-line production technology. In 1998, SDM added digital authoring equipment and support staff to its Springfield, Oregon facility. Sony Digital Authoring Services, a unit of SDM, offers everything from standard asset conversion, compression, encoding and formatting, to complete project management, menu and navigation design, and bit budgeting of a customer's creative content for CD, DVD, broadcast and the Web.
