DolbyÆ Shows Latest Professional Technologies At 104th SMPTE Technical Conference And Exhibition

20-Oct-00

DolbyÆ Laboratories showcases four of its most advanced pro audio products at this year's SMPTE conference in Pasadena, California (October 18-21, booth #108-110). In addition, Dolby staff will present white papers and lead a discussion on digital cinema. Also at the conference, Dolby's senior member of the technical staff, Craig Todd, will be made a SMPTE Fellow. DP570 Dolby staff will be demonstrating the new DP570 Multichannel Audio Tool, which greatly simplifies the production of multichannel audio programs for DTV and DVD. The DP570 enables producers and DTV broadcasters to enhance the presentation quality of their multichannel audio mix. It combines the features of Dolby Digital metadata selection and receiver emulation to enable the creation of audio metadata for multiple programs, and it also provides monitoring capabilities. The DP570 also includes many features to simplify the creation of multichannel audio programs, such as speaker selection, audio channel routing (which eliminates the need for an external router) and separate inputs for Pro LogicÆ decoding. The DP570 will be available for purchase in late January 2001. DM100 Dolby Laboratories' new handheld DM100 Bitstream Analyzer will allow audio system integrators and service engineers to quickly test the integrity and composition of Dolby Digital, Dolby E and PCM signals in a production facility, broadcast facility or home theatre. The DM100 also generates Dolby Digital, Dolby E and PCM test bitstreams. It has a headphone output for monitoring any two channels simultaneously, and a built-in speaker that can monitor the sum of any channel pair. The DM100 will be available for purchase in late October 2000. DP571 The DP571 Dolby E Encoder is designed to ease the transition by DTV broadcasters and program producers from two-channel to multichannel audio. It enables the distribution of up to eight channels of high quality audio, plus Dolby Digital metadata via a single AES3 pair, two audio tracks of a digital videotape, digital audio tape or video server. DP572 The DP572 Dolby E Decoder, counterpart of the DP571 Dolby E Encoder, decodes up to eight channels of high-quality audio plus Dolby Digital metadata from a single Dolby E-encoded AES3 pair, two audio tracks on a digital videotape, digital audio tape or video server. The DP572 is easily integrated into a broadcast facility that receives both Dolby E encoded material and stereo PCM signals on the same path to produce stereo and 5.1 multichannel audio mixes. Discussions And White Papers Bob Rast, Vice President, Business Development, Dolby Laboratories, will co-chair a session entitled ""Digital Cinema Progress Report."" The session will cover progress in digital cinema, in particular presenting the status of efforts in the SMPTE DC28 Technology Committee on Digital Cinema. It will be held October 19 at the Pasadena Center at 8am. Jeff Riedmiller, Broadcast Applications Engineer, Digital Cable & Satellite Systems, Dolby Laboratories, will present a white paper entitled ""Audio In Cable, Broadcast, And Satellite Distribution: Issues And Solutions For The Digital Transition Via Audio Metadata"" with Tom du Breuil of Motorola. The presentation will be held on October 21. (Information regarding the specific time and place of this presentation will be listed in the SMPTE program). Copies of the white paper will be available at the Dolby booth. SMPTE Awards And Recognition Craig Todd, senior member of the technical staff, Dolby Laboratories, will be made a Fellow of SMPTE at the conference, during the SMPTE Honors and Awards Ceremony held on Friday, October 20.
