25-Oct-00

DIRECTVÆ, Inc., the nation's leading provider of digital satellite television entertainment, was honored with a technical EmmyÆ Award for ""Outstanding Technological Achievement"" by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. This is the third technical Emmy Award DIRECTV has received for its digital broadcast satellite technology. DIRECTV was awarded with an Emmy statuette for ""Pre-Processing Of Baseband Video For Improved Compression,"" a technique developed by DIRECTV engineers to improve the quality and efficiency of digital video compression. ""DIRECTV is honored to receive this Emmy and would like to thank the Academy for acknowledging us again with this award,"" said David Baylor, Executive Vice President, DIRECTV, Inc. ""DIRECTV established the benchmark in digital picture quality six years ago, and continues to challenge this precedent by developing new technologies and innovative techniques that help deliver the highest quality multichannel video service in the country. I am especially proud of the DIRECTV engineering team, whose creativity and dedication has enabled us to improve the quality of our signal and offer new services to our customers."" By pre-processing the video signal, undesired portions of the signal, such as video noise, can be removed prior to compression, improving quality and efficiency. Through application of this technique, DIRECTV has again raised the standard in digital video compression. By pre-processing digital video signals, DIRECTV delivers high video quality, while improving bandwidth utilization. For more information about DIRECTV, visit www.DIRECTV.com.
