Pace Micro Technology, the Americas announced the development of digital set-top boxes (home gateways) that will enable telecommunications companies in the U.S. to deliver high quality video and interactive services over their existing copper wires. This is the first time a box with these capabilities has been available in the U.S.Paceís new DSL4000 digital home gateway is now compatible with the U.S. broadcasting standard NTSC (National Television System Committee), building on the success of the DSL4000 launch for the European broadcasting standard PAL (Phase Alternating Line) in 1999. The DSL4000 has been deployed by several operators worldwide this year, including Kingston Communications in the U.K.The DSL4000 features high quality MPEG-2 decoding, an Ethernet interface and support for Java applications. The television services are delivered over IP protocol and are video-server neutral.Other features of the DSL4000 improve network capability through video scaling and positioning; increase control of video functions using HTML, Java or Javascript, RTSP, and plug-ins - and minimize network management costs by multicasting software downloads to any or all set-top boxes in a deployment. ""This next generation box is the first ADSL development for the U.S.,"" said Pace Americas President Neil Gaydon. ""The technology is a highly effective way for telecommunications companies that want to rapidly expand the capability of their established networks. Gaydon added, ""Pace is already the worldís largest dedicated developer of digital set-top boxes on all major platforms, including cable, satellite, digital terrestrial and xDSL. Our new focus on ADSL for the U.S. is now bringing economies of scale and the established digital television technologies to telcos developing video networks worldwide.""
