C-Cube Wins In Sony's Advanced Digital Cable Set-Top Boxes

C-Cube Microsystems (NASDAQ: CUBE) announced that its AViA@TVÆ digital video silicon has been selected by Sony for the initial generation of upcoming advanced digital cable set-top boxes scheduled to be deployed in early 2001. The C-Cube AViA@TV devices will be used in both basic and advanced functionality digital cable set-top boxes being developed by Sony. There is a growing trend by consumer electronics manufacturers with strong brand identity to supply cable operators with set-tops in an effort to carve out a presence in the set-top consumer market even before the devices are sold retail. With the FCC's desire for retail availability of consumer digital cable devices and the demand for set-top interactivity rising, the market for the devices in the coming years is expected to see strong growth.
