Ten Billion CDs And DVDs Replicated In 2000 - Industry Gains Nine Percent Worldwide

8-Dec-00

Better than expected sales of both CD and DVD products will result in the first ten-billion unit replication year for optical media, the International Recording Media Association (IRMA) reported. Strong numbers for the CD audio format and DVD format will lead the industry and help it achieve a nine percent increase over 1999's total units replicated, according to Charles Van Horn, IRMA President. ""It is especially noteworthy that CD audio is considered a mature format, having been introduced some 18 years ago,"" Van Horn noted. ""Nevertheless, CD audio realized a four percent gain in units replicated in 1999 over 1998. And, for this year, IRMA is projecting the format to increase nearly five percent over 1999's numbers."" DVD-Video, representing a higher dollar content, provided replication of 194 million units worldwide, but will more than double that total in 2000 to reach some 474 million discs around the globe, according to IRMA's report. Finally, CD-R discs have experienced tremendous growth with the worldwide popularity of making personalized, custom audio recordings on this recordable format. The IRMA report forecasts CD-R demand in 2000 will reach 2.25 billion units, up an astronomical 375 percent from the 600 million units in 1998. IRMA's new Optical Media Market Intelligence Report - 2000 drew on the participation of IRMA member companies, which represent more than 80 percent of the world's optical replication capacity. The 413-page study analyzes 14 established CD and DVD formats along with new and under-development optical formats. For more information about IRMA, visit www.recordingmedia.org.
