A wide and powerful range of consumer broadband multimedia services, such as digital-quality broadcast television, high-speed Web access, 3D games, video and music-on-demand, karaoke and online shopping are now possible with the introduction of Motorola's (NYSE: MOT) Streamasterô 5000 advanced set-top box. As one of a new breed of advanced TV set-top systems, Streamaster 5000 targets telecommunication carriers and other network service providers wishing to enhance revenues and fend off competition by delivering convergent voice, video and data services to customers via high-speed Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) technology. Today, multiple international customers are announcing their selection of Streamaster 5000 to deploy broadband entertainment services to consumers. TransACT Capital Communications Pty expects to begin offering digital-quality broadcast television, video-on-demand, Web access and e-mail via VDSL services in February 2001 to subscribers in Canberra, Australia. Aliant Telecom has announced that they plan to use Streamaster 5000 for customers of its VibeVision service in Atlantic Canada. Aliant plans an aggressive market expansion of its comprehensive Advanced Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL)-based VibeVision suite of services launched in January 2001, which offers digital quality television, interactive program guide, ""infotainment"" services, Web browsing and e-mail. In addition to making such robust consumer offerings available to network service providers today, Streamaster 5000 is designed to help them to continually offer new consumer services. In the very near future, Motorola plans to incorporate into Streamaster 5000 a hard drive option that can enable personal video recording capabilities, as well as an optional DVD drive. Streamaster 5000 is also designed to give service providers the power to quickly and cost-effectively add new features via remote software upgrades as market requirements demand. This programmability helps avoid costly and frequent hardware upgrades. Streamaster 5000, which is developed within Motorola's Semiconductor Products Sector, gains its intelligence through DigitalDNAô technology. ""When it comes to selecting a set-top box, telecommunications service providers have typically had few options that offered customizable applications,"" according to Mike Paxton, Senior Analyst with Cahner's In-Stat Group. ""Streamaster 5000 architecture offers increased flexibility to the service providers and, at the same time, enhances the multimedia experience of their customers."" Consumers all over the world are demanding the convergence of communications, data and entertainment, and Motorola's Streamaster 5000 is aimed at revolutionizing these services with its open, extensible multimedia architecture. The architecture combines the key functions of a broadband router to support network computing while performing the functions of a digital home theatre platform. ""Streamaster 5000 raises the bar in offering converged consumer services and gives telecommunications service providers the leverage they need to win market share in this newly-deregulated marketplace,"" stated Jackie Beauchamp, Director and General Manager, Multimedia Systems Division, Motorola's Semiconductor Products Sector. ""Motorola offers a complete broadband strategy for the various methods of bringing broadband entertainment services to the home, and we look forward to working closely with our customers to enable the delivery of these services to consumers."" The Streamaster platform is enhanced by VM Labs' NUONô technology, which incorporates a completely programmable media processor. NUON technology enables many of Streamaster 5000's capabilities, such as 2D/3D games graphics, general MIDI music, DolbyÆ Digital audio, Spatializerô, MPEG-1/2 with video trick modes and MP3 playback. Motorola and VM Labs have a multi-year alliance, which includes games development and content publishing assistance. With Streamaster 5000, telcos can enter the broadband entertainment market with a competitive advantage by offering services and features that far surpass competitive offerings. Streamaster 5000 is available to telecommunications service providers and will be demonstrated in booth numbers N201-N204 in the Las Vegas Convention Center, North Hall, Upstairs Meeting Rooms at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Nevada, January 6-9, 2001.
