Sony Unveils Its Optical Disc Recorder Strategy For The Consumer Video Market

8-Jan-01

Sony Corporation unveiled its product roadmap of optical disc recorders for the home video market in the 21st century. The strategy focuses on two differing demands that are arising under current market conditions - first being the explosive growth of DVD-Video players, and second being the broadcasting environment shift from analog to digital, as well as from standard to high definition. Sony will now work to develop the following product lines to satisfy the above needs. For the DVD-Video market, Sony developed a new concept called ""RW Dual Compatible Recorder."" Products that derive from this concept will incorporate the playback/recording function of both the ""-RW"" and ""+RW"" discs to offer interoperability between the two formats. By offering hardware compatibility, Sony aims to offer its consumers the combined benefit of these two formats on a single hardware platform. The products will also offer playback compatibility for widely available DVD-Video discs as well. Products developed from this concept are expected to be in launched in mid-2002. For the digital high definition market, Sony will develop a high resolution/high transfer rate disc recorder called ""DVR-Blue,"" based on the blue-violet laser. Sony will exhibit and demonstrate a 22.5GB capacity/35Mbps transfer rate prototype recorder at the Sony booth, at the 2001 International CES. This technology will allow up to 2.5 hours of high definition video recording, or more than ten hours of standard definition video recording. The 21st century will bring new and exciting possibilities to the consumer video market through the development of new optical disc technologies. Sony is committed to lead the industry in this field - offering consumer benefits through the development of products for the ""RW Dual Compatible Recorder"" and ""DVR-Blue"" concepts.
