Sony, one of the originators of the CD format and the market leader in CD home decks, announced its first CD-R/RW recorder. Featuring separate CD and CD-R/RW drives, RCD-W1 incorporates a 4x speed dubbing function, allowing for a standard 74-minute CD to be recorded in less than 20 minutes. The unit provides flexibility for consumers looking to create customized mixes and CDs from their own collections for playback at home or on the road. ""We believe itís the right time to expand our digital recording options,"" said Tim Baxter, Senior Vice President of Home Audio Marketing at Sony Electronics. ""Having established MiniDisc as an ideal format for portable lifestyle applications, we believe CD-R/CD-RW will complement MD by offering a ënon PC-centricí approach to todayís rapidly growing digital market."" New Deck Incorporates Sonyís Legendary CD Technology, Performance The RCD-W1 deck offers consumers a simple recording solution by utilizing Sonyís legendary CD technology and performance. The deck can record your favorite tracks of CDs onto CD-R and CD-RW discs at 4x speed, making the recording process simple and quick without any degradation in sound quality. The deck also employs the Serial Copyright Management System (SCMS), which permits one-generation direct digital copy from original CD source material. A 24-bit D/A converter brings high resolution and precision to the conversion process by reducing noise levels across the wide dynamic range. The result is optimized sound quality playback of CD, CD-R and CD-RW discs. A digital servo is also utilized to maximize disc playback by detecting and adjusting the servo volume to suit the disc. The RCD-W1 can also be employed for preserving analog sources, such as vinyl records or cassette tapes. Equipped with a precise, high quality 20-bit A/D converter, the RCD-W1 brings analog music into the digital realm, adding digital quality and longevity. For convenience, the dual-tray design permits discs to be played from either tray, sequentially or simultaneously (for DJ/mix use and two-zone applications). Two optical digital input/output jacks are also provided, for connecting to multi-disc CD changers and other equipment. The RCD-W1 will be available in February 2001.
