Philips announced the introduction of the first multichannel Super Audio CD player (SACD 1000) at the Consumer Electronics Show. This six-channel player provides consumers the ability to surround themselves with the most lifelike audio reproduction available to date. Available this month for $1999, the SACD 1000 also includes DVD-Video, VCD and audio CD functionality, and is compatible with many audio and video formats including DSD, PCM, MPEG-2, DolbyĆ Digital, DTS Digital Surround and supports CD-R and CD-RW playback. By developing the world's first multichannel SACD player with full Direct Stream Digital resolution on all six channels, Philips brings the audio enthusiast into the center of a three-dimensional listening experience. Super Audio CD, developed by Philips and Sony, is the evolution of the CD format. It uses the latest DSD (Direct Stream Digital) technology to deliver superior sound reproduction quality, with the ability to render all of the nuances of a live performance. This technology closely reproduces original analog waveforms, producing a clearer, more natural sound that captures the musical atmosphere and emotional impact of the source material with outstanding realism. Using a sampling frequency that is 64 times higher than that of CD, Super Audio CD offers an extremely pure and natural sound. ""Philips Super Audio CD player will give a musical experience that you will not be able to forget,"" said Thorsten Koch, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Video, Philips Consumer Electronics, North America. ""While sitting in your living room you will feel as though you are in the front row of a concert performance or in the recording studio. Even the most discerning audiophiles are blown away by its natural warmth and rich, full tones. The sound truly envelops your senses."" The flagship SACD 1000 features a stylish sand-blasted aluminum design with an easy-to-use interface. The Philips SACD 1000 is optimized to deliver the best sound quality. The entire SACD functionality is encapsulated in a single, integrated circuit, and Marantz's heritage in high end audio has been used in the development of the DAC board. To guarantee the best possible audio and video quality, the SACD1000 features two separate audio and video boards. Both of these boards are independently powered by their own power supply unit. Offering consumers the option of six-channel or two-channel DSD playback, DVD-Video, CD, CD-R or CD-RW, the SACD 1000 is one of the most versatile players on the market. Philips regards compatibility as a key factor for the success of Super Audio CD, ensuring that users can play all of their existing CDs on Philips new Super Audio CD players, and many SACD discs will be two-layer hybrid SACD's that also play back on standard CD players.
