Relief from the tedium of look-alike speakers was unveiled at CES, as EdgeAudio, Inc. introduced a bold new look for its line of home theatre speaker systems. The company also announced plans to offer high-gloss color cabinet options in addition to the existing choice of wood finishes. The fresh, new look, conceived by award-winning Ziba Design, will be implemented across EdgeAudio's entire line of home theatre speakers and subwoofers, including the color cabinet versions to be offered later this year. The new EdgeAudio look is distinguished by its unique egg-shaped speaker grille - a smoothly-curved design that on the company's two-way satellite speakers is narrower at top where it covers the tweeter, then widens at the bottom to surround the woofer. The shape is mimicked by a gunmetal gray mounting frame, permanently fixed to the cabinet. The black cloth grille attaches to the frame via two hidden magnets, an elegant solution that eliminates visible grille attachment points, providing a clean, fresh look with or without the speaker grilles. The same design concept is used on the company's two subwoofers, though the grille is re-shaped to accommodate each subwoofer's driver and port. The new design is the work of Portland, Oregon-based Ziba Design, one of the world's leading industrial design firms and the recipient of numerous design awards in the U.S. and internationally, including multiple Industrial Design Excellence Awards (IDEA) from the Industrial Designers Society of America. Clients have included AT&T, Black & Decker, Compaq, Hewlett Packard and Intel, among others. The new EdgeAudio color cabinets, to be available early in the year's second quarter, will feature a high-gloss finish with multiple clear coats to create a deep, rich appearance comparable to what's found on high end guitars or auto makers' concept cars. Dark red and platinum will be the first colors offered, with additional choices to follow. The color finishes will be offered at a small premium over the cost of a wood finish. EdgeAudio Inc. offers value-priced, high performance home theatre speakers and accessories directly to consumers through the Internet at the company's own Web site, www.edgeaudio.com, and through selected other online merchants, including Amazon.com. The company combines efficient high quality manufacturing at its own plant, unique speaker technology and the distribution efficiency of direct Internet sales to offer mid-priced home theatre speakers that deliver performance and construction quality equal to systems costing far more. The company's current line includes the two-way 502D satellite speaker, the first mid-priced speaker to use DiAuralÆ technology, a new patented crossover technique that improves performance and lowers production costs. The EdgeAudio line also includes a pair of powered subwoofers - the 12-inch, 320-watt SW-12/320 and the recently-introduced 8-inch, 150-watt SW-8/150.
