Dynaudio, a loudspeaker manufacturer long associated with the highest level of speaker building, exhibited its high performance Contour Theater Series Loudspeakers in an active home theatre system at the 2001 International CES. Contour Theater (T) Series models include the Contour T2.5 and Contour T2.1 loudspeakers and the Contour Subwoofer. The Contour T Series loudspeakers represent the culmination of Dynaudioís pursuit of the highest quality and value in audio performance in combination with superior elegance in design. Dynaudioís quest for excellence means nothing has been left to chance. The Contour T Series was engineered with a primary emphasis on providing affordable yet uncompromised high fidelity performance for multichannel audio/video and two-channel stereo applications. This is reflected in Dynaudioís use of the finest grade materials and highest quality components, coupled with complete vertical integration in the handcrafted production of the loudspeakers. The Contour T Series currently features three models - the Contour T2.5, Contour T2.1 and the Contour Subwoofer. The front-ported, floor-standing T2.5 is designed for both main stereo as well as front and/or rear channel home theatre system applications, while the compact T2.1 L/C/R monitor is intended for horizontal center channel and/or vertical left/right main or surround channel applications. The Contour Subwoofer, a powered model designed to perfectly complement any two-channel stereo or multichannel surround sound system anchored by Dynaudio Contour Series loudspeakers, offers a qualitative and quantitative bass response with no compromise in performance. Although primarily designed for home theatre applications due to the seamless integration and widened listening area offered by these models, true to their Dynaudio heritage and precise tonal balance, the T Series models offer outstanding performance in audiophile grade two-channel stereo applications as well. Contour T2.5 And T2.1 Loudspeakers The Contour T2.5 and T2.1 are magnetically-shielded for easy placement near sensitive A/V equipment, eliminating any possibility that video performance would be affected. Both utilize a magnetically shielded, 28-mm (1.1-inch) diameter treated-textile soft-dome tweeter - based on Dynaudioís famed ESOTEC D260 design - which features a vented pole piece and damped rear chamber, Magnaflux (magnetic fluid) damping and cooling, a 4-mm thick die-cast aluminum front plate for maximum stiffness and heat dissipation. Each model also utilizes two proprietary 17-cm (6-1/2 inch) magnetically-shielded mid/woofers equipped with Dynaudioís legendary 75-mm (3-inch) diameter aluminum voice coils and one-piece MSP (magnesium silicate polymer) cone diaphragms. The combination of these drivers provides an overall nominal impedance load of 6 ohms to the amplifier, making the T2.5 and T2.1 suitable even for low to medium-power multichannel surround sound receivers because the relatively high impedance greatly reduces the current draw from the amplifierís power supply. Moreover, the impedance remains linear and stable to provide a very easy load. The speakers are rated at up to 200 watts continuous power handling. The drivers are positioned very close to each other to provide optimum dispersion. The Contour T2.5 and T2.1 utilize a first-order crossover for both the tweeter and woofer sections to provide superb transient response and excellent phase integration of the drivers with additional support circuits to supply the best possible coherence in the transition zone. In the crossover, all drivers perform in optimum phase to ease placement in the listening room/area. In a multichannel system, with either the T2.5 or T2.1 used as main and surround channels in combination with a T2.1 center channel, the advanced crossover technology incorporated into the T series ensures that the total energy of the surround sound system will be maximized in the listening room, with no losses or cancellations as a result of the room acoustics. This affords a widened sweet spot and excellent response regardless of listener position in the room, an important factor in any home theatre environment. All crossover components are of the highest quality, and the terminal is supplied with gold-plated, insulated binding posts for optimum connection. The crossover incorporated into the Contour T2.5 is slightly different than that in the T2.1 to adjust for the difference in the larger front baffle. The upper woofer is electrically adjusted in phase to provide a slightly upward beam, which reduces the early floor reflection in the upper midrange for improved imaging. The cabinets of the Contour T2.5 and T2.1 utilize Dynaudioís two-layered sandwich enclosure, essentially creating a box within a box, and are fitted with a 22-mm thick baffle. The matched-grain veneers from which Dynaudioís speaker cabinets are built are hand-selected by master craftsmen trained in the Danish art of furniture making. Consistent with the companyís Green marketing philosophy, there are no endangered or rainforest woods used in the production of any Dynaudio products. The front-ported Contour T2.5 and rear-ported Contour T2.1 both utilize bass reflex tubes with trumpet-shaped openings at both ends to reduce air turbulence at low frequencies. On the T2.1, the supplied foam port plug can be used to adjust the bass output of the speaker in the event the positioning of the speaker yields an artificially amplified bass response. Through their shared driver complement, the Contour T2.5 and T2.1 have been designed to be extremely similar to one another in behavior and performance in order to provide a seamless integration between the center, front/main and rear/surround channel loudspeakers, regardless of which model (T2.5 or T2.1) is used. For center channel applications, the Contour T2.1 is remarkably full range, extending down to about 30Hz, while providing a clean and natural high-fidelity sound throughout the entire frequency range. Positioned horizontally, the Contour T2.1 pronounces the midrange for clear speech recognition, with excellent vertical dispersion. When placed vertically on stands and the like, it offers excellent horizontal dispersion and an uncompromised detailed and natural performance similar to that of the floor-standing, free-standing T2.5. The Contour T2.5 utilizes an integrated plinth connected to the cabinet base with thick Neoprene bushings, and that is fitted to accept reversible spikes. With a choice of several high-grade natural veneers or matte lacquer finishes (Rosewood, Cherry, Black Ash and Beech are standard price - Birdís-Eye Maple, Walnut, Black Lacquer and White Lacquer are an additional ten percent) to choose from, the Contour 2.5 and T2.1 speakers are a perfect fit for any high quality A/V system in any decor. Contour Subwoofer The Contour Subwoofer is the perfect complement to any two-channel stereo or multichannel surround sound system anchored by Dynaudio Contour Series loudspeakers. Offering the same fine esthetic appeal as the rest of the Contour Theater Series, the Contour Subwoofer assures breathtaking performance and unsurpassed value. Similar to the other Contour models, the Subwoofer was engineered to provide affordable yet uncompromised high fidelity performance. Dynaudioís use of the finest grade materials and highest quality components, coupled with complete vertical integration in the handcrafted production of the loudspeakers, only emphasizes the strength of its commitment. The 210-watt actively powered Contour Subwoofer employs a proprietary 12-inch woofer and offers extremely deep bass response with a high level of speed, accuracy and precision. Movies on DVD, whether encoded in DolbyÆ Digital or DTSÆ Digital Surroundô, offer extreme low frequency information that can only be reproduced through a dedicated subwoofer, intensifying the home theatre experience. In stereo applications, the Contour Subwoofer is capable of reproducing the lowest bass notes accurately and naturally, with no compromise in performance. A wide range of control functions helps adapt the subwoofer to all Contour models. Level, phase and a switchable crossover frequency (80Hz, 95Hz and bypass) control can be adjusted on the subwooferís back panel. Both balanced (XLR) and single-ended (RCA) inputs are supplied for direct connection from an A/V digital preamplifier with a dedicated subwoofer output. An XLR to RCA adapter is included to accommodate traditional sub-sat stereo applications as well. To allow maximum useable output, the Contour Sub utilizes an infrasonic high-pass filter set at 15Hz, 12 dB per octave. The unit's low-pass crossover slope is 24dB per octave, and the subwooferís frequency response (anecohic measurement) is rated at 18Hz-120Hz (+/-5dB) with an impressive maximum SPL of 110db at 1m, while the average in-room maximum SPL is 119 dB. The cabinet, employing a 31-mm baffle in a front-ported bass reflex enclosure, is extremely rigid and optimized for the 12-inch woofer, which is built and finished to the same high level of precision and detail as the rest of the prestigious Contour series. Dynaudio has developed a special laser-optimized tuning process for the bass driver and cabinet that enables deeper bass extension and greater output level. Dimensions for the 101.2 lb. Contour Subwoofer are 13.1 x 28.9 x 21.9 inches (WHD). It is available in fully wrapped natural veneers (Rosewood, Cherry, Beech and Black Ash standard), matching all other Contour models. As in the rest of the Contour range, additional premium finishes (such as Bird's Eye Maple, Walnut and Black and White Lacquers) are also available for an additional ten percent, but may require longer delivery times.
