Debate On DTV Standard Ends - CEA Urges Broadcasters To Recommit To Consumer Transition

The following statement was issued by Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) President and CEO Gary Shapiro regarding the reaffirmation of the U.S. digital television standard by the Association for Maximum Service Television (MSTV) and the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB):""The debate over the modulation standard is over. All broadcasters who are seriously committed to the DTV transition should now recommit to the transition by continuing the build-out and producing more high-definition and digital content.""The results of the joint NAB/MSTV testing confirm what we have long believed - the Federal Communications Commission (FCC)-approved 8VSB modulation system is the best choice for broadcasting digital television (DTV) in the United States. These results also reaffirm that the FCC made the correct decision in initially selecting, and again re-endorsing 8VSB last year.""It is time to return to the key element of the transition - providing consumers with the full benefits of digital television.""We look forward to continuing our work with the FCC, the broadcast industry and others to ensure that DTV succeeds more rapidly. With this overwhelming broadcaster re-endorsement of the 8-VSB standard and additional broadcast programming, manufacturers and consumers can move ahead with certainty to manufacture and buy DTV tuners.""Source: CEA
