PS Audio, an innovator for the last 30 years in developing superb high performance audio components at reasonable prices, announced that its much anticipated Power Plant P1200 AC Power Generator is finally shipping to dealers and end users, and was exhibited at the 2001 CES.This superb component, flagship of the Power Plant line, is designed to improve both the audio and video performance in a home theatre system by generating pure AC line voltage, which is significantly cleaner than the AC voltage provided by standard wall outlets. At 1200 powerful watts of continuous operation, this is the ultimate solution for powering the most demanding audio and video systems. The P1200 is also the largest in the series of Power Plants that include the award-winning models P300 and P600. Power Plants are actual AC generators that produce perfectly clean AC power under any conditions, even when the incoming AC is clipped or badly distorted - something no filter, power line conditioner or balanced transformer can achieve. The P1200 provides complete protection from surges, lightning, noise and erratic line behavior. The Power Plant's output is fully regulated, so it will always produce 120 volts AC regardless of how low or high line voltage drops or spikes. The P1200 is intended for use with stereo power amplifiers up to 400 watts per channel into 8 ohms, or with mono block amplifiers up to 900 watts (requiring the use of two P1200s), or with slightly lower wattage power amplifiers plus low level devices, such as preamps, CD players, DVD players and the like. For whatever is connected to the P1200, the total current requirements of all units combined should not exceed 1200 watts. Should the 1200-watt rating be exceeded by even a small amount, the P1200 protectively and automatically displays a red LED status indicator and turns off. For additional protection, a yellow LED signals when Power Plant output reaches 1000 watts, indicating that the maximum advisable number of units that can be attached to the P1200's AC output receptacles has been reached. The rear of the P1200 houses eight hospital-grade AC outlets, manufactured by Arrow Hart electronics. Manufactured out of solid brass, then nickel plated, they feature full surface area prong grips and extra tension hold. (On export models, PS Audio provides two styles of plugs available for 220-volt operation, the German/European ""Schuko"" plugs and the excellent Neutrik Power Cons. For markets in the U.K., Hong Kong, and other areas with British-based systems, PS Audio offer four U.K.-style shuttered connectors, as well as four Neutrik Power Cons. Export models can be requested with the Euro and U.K.-style 220-volt plugs.)The P1200 is no lightweight, weighing in at 150 pounds and 30 inches in length. Due to the enormous power the P1200 is capable of delivering, it requires a 30-amp dedicated 117 volt AC circuit to feed it, or a 15-20 amp 220-volt circuit. If this type of feed is not available, the P1200's output power will be somewhat limited. For example, on a 115V 20A circuit, which is the minimum that it can be operated on, the maximum output will be near 1100 watts. The P1200's controls include the Power button, a Mode button that indicates the number of watts produced by the Power Plant, and Select Up/Down buttons that allow users to change the output frequency. The ability to select the Power Factor (frequency) provides significant sonic and visual improvements that can be customized for each user's equipment.Operating equipment at a frequency higher than the nominal output frequency of the wall socket (50 or 60 Hz) is the secret behind the P1200ís success. It includes 20 frequencies, which are displayed on the front panelís three-digit numeric readout. The ""factors"" vary from 50 to 120Hz in 20 steps. Higher frequencies bring a noticeable improvement to a system's sonic depth. Also included are frequencies to insure that turntables and tape recorders maintain perfectly accurate speed. For example, a P1200 setting of 60Hz generates a perfect speed of 33 1/3, ideal for a turntable, while a setting of 81Hz generates the perfect speed for a 45 rpm single. The P1200 Power Plant, domestic model, is available for $3,950 and includes a 30-day, risk-free, in-home examination. For additional information, visit PS Audioís Web site at www.psaudio.com.
