Thomson Multimedia Opens New Research Laboratory In Princeton, New Jersey

26-Jan-01

In order to expand its innovation capabilities in digital technologies and to reinforce its research and development efforts, Thomson Multimedia (NYSE: TMS) announced the creation of a Research and Development laboratory in Princeton, New Jersey. The laboratory is Thomson's sixth for research and development and is dedicated to the convergence of video and the Internet. In collaboration with Thomson's other research centers located in Rennes (France), Indianapolis (U.S.A.), Hanover, Villingen (Germany) and Tokyo (Japan), the Princeton laboratory will work on cutting-edge technologies such as broadband digital products and solutions, and will develop key technologies for Thomson's services and products such as digital audio and video devices with broadband access. Main categories of research will be streaming technologies for audio, video and data content over future broadband and 3G mobile networks (xDSL, UMTS, W-CDMA and CDMA 2000), use of new generation Internet protocols (IPv6) and interface layers (APIs) for multimedia application. As a result of this research, Thomson Multimedia will be poised to quickly integrate solutions adapted to the future needs of its clients. The immediate proximity of Thomson Multimedia's Patents and Licensing center in Princeton will help reinforce the link between the group's patent and research activities. The laboratory will also benefit from the close proximity of prestigious research centers and top American universities on the East Coast such as MIT, Princeton, Columbia, and Carnegie-Mellon, where Thomson intends to develop partnerships and seek new talent. The new center has an initial team of researchers and engineers coming from Thomson's other laboratories in Indianapolis, Rennes and Hanover. One objective of this initial team is to combine the best of European and American research by capitalizing on one of Thomson Multimedia's sheer strengths - its truly international approach to employee management and markets. This new Princeton laboratory will enable Thomson Multimedia to reinforce its worldwide effort in research and development, develop innovative digital products for the consumer, and offer business-to-business solutions to broadcasters, content providers and network operators for the deployment of integrated solutions of digital video content. Technicolor (whose acquisition was recently finalized by Thomson Multimedia) should benefit from these additional research efforts, especially in technologies needed in the development of new, secure digital platforms for its customers.
