Zenith Introduces New Device That Converts Infrared Remote Controls Into RF-IR Remotes In Seconds

20-Mar-01

Zenith has launched a new remote control product that allows the consumer to control audio or video sources from nearly anywhere in the home. Named the Zenith ""Space Commandô,"" this new product allows consumers to turn any infrared (IR) remote control into a radio frequency (RF) remote by simply installing the RF controller into the battery cavity of the IR remote control. Calling the Space Command a ""unique consumer convenience device,"" Len Coakley, Zenith Vice President, Accessories, said, ""By converting your existing infrared remote control into a whole-house RF remote control, the Space Command allows you to control your cable or satellite box, audio receiver or CD player from any room."" The patented Space Command product will work with most manufacturers' remote controls and is as easy to use as changing a battery. The consumer need only snap the smaller version of a AA or AAA battery into the Space Command cartridge, and then insert the unit into the remote control. Coakley said that, unlike traditional IR-RF-IR remote control extenders, the Zenith Space Command utilizes RF-RF-IR technology. The Space Command capitalizes on the RF signal generated by the IR diode when an IR remote control is activated. The Space Command-powered remote control range is up to 100 feet. The manufacturer's suggested list price for the Space Command is $39.99. Availability is scheduled for the second quarter of 2001.
