TMH Corporation's Bass Manager is especially well-suited to fill a growing need in the home marketplace. Newly introduced multichannel DVD-Audio and SACD players lack bass management on their analog outputs, and virtually all receivers and controllers on the market today do not perform bass management on their analog inputs. (Multichannel DVD-Audio and SACD players do not offer a digital interconnect for their primary-grade signals, although they may for lower bit rate DolbyÆ Digital and DTSÆ Digital Surroundô.) This leads to the lowest frequencies of the five main channels not being reproduced by most home sound systems, a very serious problem. The Bass Manager is a member of TMH's Multichannel Audio Processing System (MAPS). It extracts the lowest bass from the main channels below an adjustable crossover frequency, and supplies that lowest bass to the system's subwoofer, where it is reproduced in the correct balance with the rest of the spectrum. The subwoofer and main channel filters match each other when considering the response of the main channel speakers to produce a smooth response through the crossover region. The bass manager also properly handles the LFE channel (the 0.1 of 5.1), adding the required +10dB offset and limiting the bandwidth to 120Hz, as prescribed by standards. A switch defeats the bandwidth limit for the case of those few source discs that contain wideband information on track 6 of the formats. The specifications are exemplary. For instance, the dynamic range of the main channels typically exceeds 130dB, better than the sources being fed to it. The cost is $895. TMH Corporation is a six year old Los Angeles company founded by Tomlinson Holman and Friederich Koenig with professional and home-oriented activities in multichannel audio for music and film.
