New Family Of High Fidelity Audio Coders Deliver CD-Type Quality

29-Mar-01

Digital Voice Systems, Inc. (DVSI), manufacturers of the innovative line of Lansonicô Digital Audio Servers (DAS), has introduced a new family of high performance audio compression technologies that deliver CD-quality sound and are ideal for high performance music applications. DVSIís new audio compression technologies include its state of the art SonaPaKô Lossless Audio Compression System that is featured in the latest Lansonicô PRO Series Digital Audio Server models (www.lansonic.com). With SonaPaKô, a patent-pending bi-directional prediction algorithm is used to remove unnecessary zeros and other redundant data from an audio signal, resulting in approximately two-to-one average compression compared to the original. Furthermore, with SonaPaKô, the compression can be completely reversed, allowing the music signal to be played back with perfect fidelity - not even a single bit is changed compared to the original CD. This makes the SonaPaKô system ideal for audio applications requiring efficient compression (to enhance storage or transmission of music) that canít tolerate any degradation in sound quality. DVSI is also introducing its new High Speed Variable Bit Rate (HS-VBRô) MP3 encoder, that provides the highest quality variable bit rate encoding using the popular MP3 compression format. Unlike virtually all other MP3 encoders, DVSIís HS-VBRô encoder was designed from the ground up to take advantage of variable bit rate, while maintaining very fast execution speed. The result is high fidelity music compression at 100 to 200kbps while running at approximately 4x real-time on a 500MHz PC. And compared to fixed bit rate systems, DVSIís HS-VBRô MP3 Encoder obtains significantly better compression while maintaining CD-quality sound. In addition to its HS-VBRô MP3 encoder, DVSI has a full line of encoder and decoder software for MPEG-1 Layers 1, 2 and 3. This software is fully compliant with the MPEG-1 standard for high performance audio compression/decompression, and supports all the standard bit rates between 32 to 448kbps (including VBR). The software includes Layers 1 and 2 (so called ěmp1î and ěmp2î) which are widely used for professional and broadcast quality audio, as well as Layer 3 (i.e. mp3), which is the leading format for CD quality audio on the Internet and in portable/home electronics. DVSIís MPEG-1 software is ideal for both professional and consumer applications. It is available for both PCs and other general purpose computers as well as for a number of DSP and RISC processors including the Analog Devices 21xxx SHARC family of DSPs. DVSIís new line of high performance audio compression technologies are featured in the award-winning Lansonicô Digital Audio Server. ěThese new audio compression systems significantly enhance the performance of the Lansonicô DAS-750-PROî, states Paul Salvo, Product Manager for Lansonic, ěwith SonaPaKô lossless compression, we can provide all the benefits of a hard disk-based music system, including instant access, centralized storage, flexible control and multi-zone playback, while doubling our storage capacity and not compromising even a single bit of audio quality.î Salvo continues, ěOn top of that weíre using DVSIís HS-VBRô MP3 encoder whenever more compression is needed and we can get average compression ratios of 7 to 10x with virtually no change in sound quality from the original CD.î Adds John Hardwick, President of DVSI, ěThe superior performance characteristics of the new audio coders make them ideally suited for music and other audio applications that demand the highest sound quality.î Founded in 1988, Digital Voice Systems, Inc. specializes in speech and audio compression and is the owner/developer of the IMBEô and AMBEĆ voice coders which are used worldwide for digital communications and storage applications. DVSIís focus is the development and manufacture of speech, audio and communications technologies and products. DVSI is a leading provider of hardware and software voice coding solutions to equipment manufacturers and OEMs throughout the world. DVSI is the company behind the Lansonicô brand of Digital Audio Servers. Lansonicô Digital Audio Servers, winner of the prestigious 2001 Innovation Design and Engineering Awards, are entirely designed and engineered in the United States.
