DolbyÆ Laboratories was on hand at this year's Game Developers Conference in San Jose, California, March 22-24, to educate game developers about the company's new Virtual Incubator Program, which helps developers mix and encode their games using Dolby SurroundÆ and Dolby Digital technology.Dolby Laboratories' Virtual Incubator Program (VIP) is designed to promote audio excellence in games incorporating Dolby Surround and Dolby Digital technology. Dolby provides helpful materials to game developers, including talent and resource information, marketing support, and equipment data. At the show, Dolby staff demonstrated how Dolby's surround technologies are mixed and encoded into games using working models of four differently-budgeted studios and PC-based workstations: a full scale production studio using a combination of Mackie and Dolby equipment, a Nuendo/Steinberg Digital Audio Workstation, a Minnetonka MX51 Digital Audio workstation, and a low-budget ìguerillaî mixing station. Dolby staff also demonstrated the enhancement Dolby Digital 5.1 has on the game playing experience using Creative Labs' Sound Blaster Live 5.1 and DTT-3500 PC system. Interested developers can receive a Dolby Interactive Sound Kit (DISK), which is a resource guide to multichannel audio in games and includes mixing tools, tips, and technology.""Dolby Laboratories is a start-to-finish resource for developers who want to mix with multichannel audio,"" said Dennis Staats, Director, Computer and Games Technology Marketing. ""As the game playing community starts expecting more multichannel audio content, we'd like to help educate developers on the best methods to meet gamers' audio needs.""To date, major developers have committed to using Dolby multichannel audio technology for over 30 titles for the Sony PlayStationÆ 2 alone. Developers planning to release games in Dolby Digital 5.1 include Acclaim, Argonaut, ATD, Brain In A Jar, Criterion, Eidos, Infogrames, Jester, Microprose Motorsports, Rage, Sony Studios, and Squaresoft. For more information about Dolby Laboratories or Dolby technologies, visit www.dolby.com.
