New DolbyĆ Digital Sound Systems For Riviera And Palais Screens At Cannes 2001

13-Apr-01

For the 27th consecutive year, DolbyĆ Laboratories is providing technical and engineering assistance at the Cannes International Film Festival, May 9-20. Each year since 1974, Dolby has sent engineers - and often the latest Dolby cinema equipment - to help directors, producers, and distributors exhibit their films with the best possible sound. All eight of the screening rooms in the Riviera building will have the latest all-digital Dolby CP650 cinema processors installed. With total sales worldwide now in excess of 2,000 in its introductory year, the CP650 is at the top of the companyís cinema product range. ""Weíre delighted to have CP650s for the first time in the Riviera, and will be ensuring that they provide the very best sound possible for the trade films being shown,"" said Graham Edmondson, Film Marketing Manager. In the Palais des Festivals, four more rooms will be upgraded to Dolby Digital - the Bazin, the Bory, and screening rooms I and J. This brings the total number of Dolby Digital theatres in Cannes to 22. As last year, Dolbyís digital double-head screening system (which uses Akai DD8 units), will also be available throughout the festival for unfinished films that do not have a married print available. By running two digital playback units synchronized to the projectors, the cinema can play the studio digital master copy directly, without losing audio integrity and time, as no magnetic film transfer is required. The organizers have come to rely on Dolbyís technical support over the years for the smooth running of the festival. ""We believe that the sound provided by Dolby Laboratories for the Cannes Film Festival is second to none,"" said Jerome Paillard, Executive Director of Cannes Film Market. ""Weíre particularly excited about the eight new CP650s in the Riviera building - the screening rooms were designed with high-quality sound and picture in mind, and the CP650s are the perfect processors to install as the heart of the sound system.""
