The following statement was issued by Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) President and CEO Gary Shapiro in response to the digital television (DTV) status report presented April 23, 2001 by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC):""CEA and the FCC are in general agreement about the state of the transition to digital television. While sales of DTV products continue to rise and prices decline, more programming is required to drive the transition. Additionally, the relevant industries must resolve the remaining issues surrounding DTV-digital cable interoperability and reach agreement on a copy protection scheme that protects intellectual property while preserving the customary fair use and home recording rights of consumers.""CEA is proud of the leading role television manufacturers are playing in the DTV transition. The availability and sales of DTV products continue to increase. Manufacturers are introducing and distributing new models of digital television products, providing consumers with a wide array of options for entering the DTV era. And prices continue to decline even as performance of these products improves.""We are gratified that the DTV transition is gaining momentum and stand ready to work with all industries to resolve the remaining issues so more and more consumers can enjoy the wonders and benefits of digital television. We thank the FCC for its continuing leadership on DTV.""For more information about the CEA, visit www.ce.org.
