The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) and the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) announced their intentions to implement a joint digital television (DTV) promotional program to begin in the fall of 2001.The DTV promotional program, which is targeted toward consumers, will combine print/broadcast advertising, a local retailer tie-in and a public relations campaign to raise the awareness of the products and programming options for digital television. The announcement of the joint CEA/NAB campaign was made at the DTV Store at NAB 2001, NAB's annual spring convention. The DTV Store - co-sponsored by CEA, NAB and the Advanced Television Systems Committee - features an array of new digital television products from a variety of DTV manufacturers.""We're excited to be joining with television manufacturers to promote digital television to the American public,"" said NAB President and CEO Edward O. Fritts. ""DTV offers consumers better picture quality and a plethora of new services that will be free of charge to viewers. This promotional effort will both educate consumers about the benefits of digital and high definition television, and serve as a reminder that DTV's time has come.""""We already have seen enthusiasm for this campaign from manufacturers and retailers,"" said Gary Shapiro, President and CEO of CEA. ""The time is ripe for DTV consumer promotion. Our research shows us that consumers are excited about DTV, they want to buy DTV and they want to know what DTV programs are available in their area.""The promotional campaign, which will roll out this fall, is expected to be unveiled in a few markets, yet to be determined, and then roll out into more markets in 2002.""We think this promotional campaign will really excite consumers about this new technology,"" said Shapiro. ""Combining this program with some of the other DTV promotions that CES is involved in, like showcasing DTV at home shows, promoting our DTV Web site - dtvweb.org - and reaching consumers through the media, we believe that consumers will really begin to see the benefits of DTV in their homes.""For more information about the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA),visit www.ce.org.
