Future Of The Cinema To Be Debated This Weekend

Donít be surprised if a few sparks fly when some of the industryís top filmmakers meet to exchange ideas with technology leaders. The event is the annual Spring Educational Seminar, co-hosted by the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE), the USC School of Cinema-Television, and the Entertainment Technology Centerís (ETC) Digital Cinema Laboratory at the Hollywood Pacific Theatre Friday, May 18 and Saturday, May 19. The topic is ìThe Cinema - Now And The Future.î The seminar will tackle a broad agenda including production, post-production, and distribution, as well as presentation. Co-chairs Charles S. Swartz and Leon Silverman have assembled an all-star cast of cinematographers, including Allen Daviau, ASC, Stephen Goldblatt, ASC, BSC, John Hora, ASC, Laszlo Kovacs, ASC, Hiro Narita, ASC, Aaron Schneider, ASC, and Nancy Schreiber, ASC, augmented by directors Mikael Salomon, ASC and Donald Petrie, and visual effects supervisor Michael Fink. ìThis talented group of filmmakers will discuss the pros and cons of film, digital and hybrid imaging technologies,î says Silverman. ìTheyíll debug myths and Iím sure they have opinions about setting higher standards for both digital and optical projection.î Participants from the technology and management hierachy include Jerry Pierce, Universal Studios, Leon Silverman, Laser Pacific Media, Tom Scott, SMPTE DC28 Study Group, James H. Korris, ETC, Sarah Priestnall, Kodak, Ira Lichtman, Walt Disney Imagineering Research and Development, C. Chapin Cutler, Boston Light & Sound, Bill Werner, Texas Instruments, Bob Lambert, The Walt Disney Company, J. Wayne Anderson, R/C Theaters, Phil Barlow, Walt Disney Motion Picture Group, Mats Erixon, Swedish Royal Institute of Technology, Thomas McGrath, Viacom Entertainment Group, and Dick Walsh, AMC. ìThese dedicated technology leaders and managers will play important roles in determining the future of the cinema,î says Swartz. ìOur goal is to eliminate the hype by vendors who have dominated discussions at festivals and trade shows and get the creative and technology communities to talk and resolve problems face to face.î The seminar opens with a reception at 6:30pm on Friday, May 18, followed by a 7:30pm screening of a popular motion picture in which alternating reels will be shown in film and digital projection.
