April DVD Sales Remain Strong

18-May-01

Manufacturer-to-dealer sales of DVD players increased 54 percent during April, to just over 631,000 units, according to figures released by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). Still recognized as the fastest selling product in the history of consumer electronics, these figures mark 36 consecutive months in which sales of DVD players have posted gains. Year-to-date manufacturer-to-dealer sales of camcorders also have increased by just over one percent over 2000 figures, to 1.6 million units. Despite the strong performance by DVD players, overall video sales were down for the month. ""The current economic slowdown has made a visible impact on video unit sales during the month of April,"" said Sean Wargo, Senior Industry Analyst for CEA. ""However, in spite of the slight decrease, the growth maintained by DVD players and other products are proof that consumers are still embracing digital technologies. The long-term outlook for the industry remains strong."" For more information about the CEA, visit www.ce.org.
