20-Jun-01

According to figures released by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), manufacturer-to-dealer sales of DVD players and camcorders increased by 15 percent and six percent, respectively, during the month of May. Dollar sales of digital television (DTV) products and sales of overall digital video products continue to increase as consumers make the transition from analog to digital formats. Manufacturers of DVD players shipped 523,000 units, compared to the 453,000 units shipped during May 2000. Similarly, factory-to-dealer sales for camcorders reached 454,000 units last month, compared to 429,000 units in 2000. Total dollar sales of DTV sets and displays through the month of April reached $560 million, up 106 percent over 2000 figures. ""Digital video recorders, digital camcorders, DVD players and DTV continue to amaze consumers and are driving interest and sales in the video category,"" said Gary Shapiro, President and CEO of CEA. ""This interest and the resulting sales will only continue to grow as more and more Americans come in contact with digital entertainment.""
