The FB 212 is a completely new subwoofer design from Monitor Audio. A compound push-pull (isobaric) configuration has been implemented to produce extremely deep, powerful bass from a reasonably compact cabinet. New 12-inch bass drivers have been developed to incorporate Monitor Audio's revolutionary C-CAMô (ceramic coated aluminum magnesium) metal cone built onto a heavy-duty, die-cast alloy chassis. A powerful MOSFET class AB power amplifier supplies 360 watts RMS continuous power to provide firm grip and impressive sound pressure right down to 19 Hz. A number of unique features have been incorporated to facilitate simple operation and installation. The most unique and useful is the new variable Q control. The new adaptive Q control allows the system Q to be varied continuously between 0.5 and 1.5. When the control is set to 0.5, the system will exhibit the quickest and tightest transient response. At a Q of 1.5 the system will provide a more rounded, less defined response for high energy impact on movie soundtracks. The Q control can also be used to tune the FB 212 to the room and the desired position, effectively tuning out any residual ""boom."" All these major new features are housed in Monitor Audio's renowned real wood veneer cabinets, featuring the highest build and standard of finish available.Another important feature of this design is the ability to produce very low distortion levels. A new transmission line type vent arrangement (HiVeô) provides a high velocity air transfer, with no audible chuffing, while the rectangular arrangement and individual chambers give a high degree of structural integrity. Two 12-inch long throw woofers are configured face-to-face and connected electrically out-of-phase. The cancellation effect reduces distortion when one of the units cancels any distortion produced by the other. A compound push-pull (isobaric) design is seldom used due to the complex construction and high build cost. However, the performance is much better than conventional direct-radiating or band-pass designs. Each 12-inch driver features a 3-inch high power voice coil and 2.6-kg (5.7-pound) magnet. The rigid C-CAM cone assembly ensures no flexing can occur at high power levels. The FB 212 power amplifier features discreet class AB circuitry to give a purist approach to sound quality. 360 watts RMS is supplied from a bank of multiple high current MOSFET output devices. A 600 VA shielded transformer and 40,000 microfarads of smoothing capacitors ensure massive current reserves, when heavy peak demands are required. A filter bypass switch allows the line inputs to provide filtering or direct input. The bypass can be used to give accurate control when connected to a DolbyÆ Digital processor. Tone and pitch definition are acclaimed attributes of the FB 212, being able to accurately resolve square wave pulses without exception over the entire frequency band. The FB 212 has a rated frequency response or 19 Hz to 40/160 Hz (variable), +/-3 dB. The cabinet is made of 22 mm MDF and comes in real wood cherry, rose mahogany and black oak veneer finishes. It measures 17 by 22.5 by 15.75 inches (WHD), and weighs 113 pounds. The suggested retail price is $1,995.For more information, visit www.monitoraudio.com.
