The GRFX Surround Speaker is the newest member of the Monitor Audio Gold Reference Series. The curved profile gives an elegant appearance while maintaining a discreet, stealthy look when mounted on the wall. The angular cabinet is made from MDF, featuring two one-inch gold dome C-CAM tweeters and one 6.5-inch RST mid-bass drivers in a sealed box design. The C-CAM gold dome tweeters are taken from the Gold Series and feature a double magnet structure with through pole venting and damped low frequency rear chamber. The single RST mid-bass driver is the same unit that is used in the in the Gold Reference 60 and produces a modest level of bass for such a compact enclosure. C-CAM (Ceramic Coated Aluminum Magnesium) tweeters are made from an innovative aluminium and magnesium alloy originally developed for the aerospace industry for use as blades in jet engines. The alloy is an ideal material with which to manufacture speaker cones as it is extremely rigid while remaining very light.RST (Rigid Surface Technology) mid-bass drivers use dimpled C-CAM cones to increase stiffness, eliminate bending and lower mass. Sonic benefits are crisper transient performance, wider dynamic range and lower distortion.By using low slope linear phase crossover topology, Monitor Audio have engineered the GRFX to have seamless integration and almost perfect 180-degree dispersion characteristics. This is especially effective at minimising the ""beaming"" effect as high frequencies become more directional with increase in frequency. While the mid-bass driver always operates in phase, the tweeter section can be configured to operate as a bipole or dipole, depending on the configuration of the terminals. The GRFX is constructed from four separate parts: the angular acoustic enclosure, perforated polymer grille and top/bottom caps. The acoustic enclosure is constructed from MDF and finished in a durable black paint, while the top/bottom caps are made from MDF with real wood veneer. The top/bottom caps are identical and can be replaced with another real wood finish to suit the customer's decor. The top/bottom caps are fitted using standard grille-type fasteners that make for easy servicing or removal. The grille is made from an unbreakable perforated polymer, which is covered with acoustically transparent grille cloth. The grille forms an arc shape by sitting in the recessed grooves in the top/bottom caps. The GRFX can be wall mounted with ""keyhole"" type mounting brackets, which are included with each pair. As a dipole it can provide wide coverage of high frequency information while creating the reverse phase zone effect for use as a sidewall speaker in a 7.1 system or a 5.1 system in a large room installation. The dipole/bipole facility is configured by means of terminal orientation; this gives reliable operation for the lifetime of the product. The suggested retail price for the GRFX is $1,995.
