Mirage Delivers Junior OM-Series Model -- OM-9

Replacing the Mirage OM-10, the new Mirage OM-9 is a 6.5-inch, two-way, four-driver, vented floor-standing design that has benefited from much of the research and development that went into the design of its larger siblings, the OM-5 and OM-7. Key to the Mirage Omnipolar? philosophy, and differentiating it from ""bipolar,"" is the small distance between the front and rear baffles of the loudspeakers. Whereas the typical bipolar speaker has front and rear mounted drivers, the much greater distances between them, inherent in their large, deep enclosures, have significant negative ramifications for their ability to deliver a spherical, radiating soundfield. Only Mirage Omnipolar loudspeakers are shallow enough to provide 90-degree off-axis response that is sufficiently ""flat"" to permit (for demonstration purposes) setting up the speakers sideways, without destroying their imaging capabilities. To generate a sufficient cabinet volume to support the satisfyingly deep bass, the OM-9 cabinets widen toward the bottom, resulting in a tall, narrow enclosure that is small in footprint, yet stable. Engineering strides in driver design focused on voice coil/motor structure refinements and on dome/cone materials. Cabinet design also stressed further elimination of resonance through improved bracing and stiffening measures. More than forty percent heavier than its ""gen one"" OM-10 predecessor, and significantly more elegant, the performance improvements of the OM-9, apparent at the CES launch included better Omnipolar? dispersion, flatter frequency response, superior rendering of inner detail and subtlety, and surprisingly deep, controlled bass.
