Telarc International, an industry leader in digital recording for more than two decades, announces the re-release of the 2000 allstar compilation, Celebrating the Music of Weather Report, on Super Audio Compact Disc (SACD).The new SACD format, created by Sony and Philips, provides unprecedented sound quality in stereo and discrete multi-channel surround. To achieve its sonic performance, SACD employs a radically new digital encoding technology called Direct Stream Digital. DSD samples the musical signal at a phenomenal 2.8 million times a second - 64 times greater than traditional CD recordings. The result is an extremely smooth digital waveform with unparalleled frequency response and dynamic range. Telarc is now recording all of its projects using the DSD process. The potential benefits of SACD do not stop with its performance. The SACD format supports several disc configurations, including a Hybrid SACD designed to be completely compatible with the millions of CD players in the market today. Hybrid SACDs actually contain two complete layers of music information. One layer contains a conventional CD layer, which can play on any standard CD player. The other, high-density layer contains both the original DSD two-channel recording as well as a DSD six-channel recording that can be played in the new generation of stereo and surround SACD players. Each of the six channels can be recorded separately with full 100 kHz frequency response and 120dB dynamic range; the two-channel section achieves even greater frequency response and dynamic range across the audio band. Both the six-channel and the two-channel sound images have unparalleled resolution and transparency. All of this technological innovation further enhances the already vibrant musical experience of Celebrating the Music of Weather Report. Originally released in traditional compact disc format in 2000, the Telarc compilation assembles an army of top-level musicians ? including Weather Report alumni Victor Bailey on bass and Omar Hakim on drums - to pay tribute to the pioneer supergroup of jazz-rock fusion in the 70s and 80s.Weather Report was the brainchild of keyboardist Josef Zawinul and saxophonist Wayne Shorter in 1970. Both had been a part of Miles Davis? jazz-rock experiments just a few years earlier, and their highly successful spinoff project remained active for 15 years. Neither nostalgic nor clichÈ, the 11 tracks on Celebrating the Music of Weather Report highlight all the important phases in the group?s evolution, including the chart-topping ?Birdland,? ?Elegant People,? ?Badia,? ?Young and Fine,? ?Cannonball,? ?Pursuit of the Woman with the Feathered Hat,? ?Mysterious Traveller,? ?Harlequin,? ?Man in the Green Shirt,? ?Palladium? and ?Cucumber Slumber.?In addition to Bailey and Hakim, the roster also includes some of the most widely recognized and respected figures in contemporary jazz and instrumental music: saxophonists Jay Beckenstein, David Sanborn and Michael Brecker; trumpeter Randy Brecker; bassists Marcus Miller and John Patitucci; guitarist John Scofield; pianist Joe Sample; and vocalists Take 6. The recording was produced and arranged by Jason Miles, a multi-talented musician with top session and production credits, solo albums and award-winning film music since the mid-80s. Miles was the primary programmer and keyboardist for Whitney Houston, Chaka Khan, Diana Ross, Aretha Franklin, Kiss and others. He created most of the synth sounds on Miles Davis? classic Tutu, and contributed to Michael Jackson?s History album.Telarc currently has seven titles in various genres available in multi-channel (Hybrid) SACD and plans to release approximately eleven more - in classical, jazz, contemporary jazz and blues - in this format by the end of 2001. Approximately 36 titles will be available in the six-channel SACD format by June 2002.
