Gearing up for the holiday shopping season, manufacturer-to-dealer sales of DVD players and camcorders made solid gains during the month of November, according to figures released by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). November factory sales of DVD players increased 105 percent to just shy of 1.8 million units, with year-to-date unit sales of DVD players up 50 percent, compared to the same period in 2000. Camcorders also enjoyed sales gains during November, with an increase of 29 percent to 627,873 units.Additionally, October sales of digital television (DTV) products continued to rise, with manufacturer-to-dealer dollar sales reaching $341 million for the month, a gain of 87 percent over October 2000.""The continued demand for digital video products substantiates what our market research found in a pre-holiday survey -- that consumers desire DVDs, DTVs and other digital video products as gifts for friends and family,"" said CEA President and CEO Gary Shapiro. ""As we look to the 2001 holiday buying season, the strong demand for digital video technologies makes us confident that sales of video products will remain strong. This is great news -- particularly in light of the current economy."" Data cited in this release is available for purchase through CEA's Market Activity Reports and Analysis (MARA) program.
