Progressive Scan Discs Provide Higher Picture Quality Than Existing Interlaced Scanning

21-Feb-02

DVD International, an industry leader in the distribution of special interest DVD titles, in association with Alpha DVD, developers of cutting edge DVD programming, have announced the introduction of DVD titles produced in the 480P(30) format, which provides the most technologically advanced and highest quality DVD picture. The first title, ěThe Australian Outback,î is available now, with four more titles to follow in the second quarter. The announcement was made today by David Goodman, President, DVD International, and Ralph LaBarge, Managing Partner, alpha DVD. ěWeíve consistently focused our marketing and sales efforts on titles designed to provide the highest audio and video quality possible in a DVD,î said Goodman. ěThis new format will put us in the forefront as consumers continue to look for the most technologically advanced consumer electronic products available.î ěDVD technology is changing rapidly, as consumers expect more and more out of what has become the fastest selling consumer electronics product,î said La Barge. ěWith this format, we have developed an innovative delivery mechanism that we think will change the way DVDs are viewed in the future.î The 480p(30) video format displays images at 30 frames per second (fps), as opposed to 24 fps used by traditional film content. While most television monitors display interlaced images - breaking the picture in two groups of scan lines - the progressive scan image of 480p is displayed as one set of lines, providing superior picture quality. In addition to the better quality of a progressive format, the higher frame rate used in 480P(30) delivers a smoother image. DVD Internationalís first title available in 480p(30) is ěThe Australian Outback,î a visual tour of the land down under, featuring spectacular panoramic imagery of Australian landscape photographer Michael Scott Lees, coupled with indigenous music by the Australian group Rivertribe. In April, the company will release ěAustralia,î the latest title in its Planet Earth series, followed by the first three volumes in the Natural Splendors series. All of the titles in the 480P(30) series are encoded at the highest bit rates allowed by the DVD-Video specification, and include high quality audio in both the Dolby Digital (AC3) and DTS formats.
