Telarc International, an industry leader in digital recording for 25 years, announces the release of Junior Wellsí ìCome On In This Houseî - the veteran bluesmanís final studio recording before his death in 1998 - on Super Audio Compact Disc. The new SACD format, created by Sony and Philips, provides unprecedented sound quality in stereo and discrete multi-channel surround. To achieve its sonic performance, SACD employs a radically new digital encoding technology called Direct Stream Digital. DSD samples the musical signal at a phenomenal 2.8 million times a second - 64 times greater than traditional CD recordings. The result is an extremely smooth digital waveform with unparalleled frequency response and dynamic range. Telarc is now recording all of its projects using the DSD process. The potential benefits of SACD do not stop with its performance. The SACD format supports several disc configurations, including a Hybrid SACD designed to be completely compatible with the millions of CD players in the market today. Hybrid SACDs actually contain two complete layers of music information. One is the conventional CD layer, which can play on any standard CD player. The other, high-density layer contains both the original DSD two-channel recording as well as a DSD six-channel recording that can be played in the new generation of stereo and surround SACD players. Each of the six channels can be recorded separately with full 100 kHz frequency response and 120dB dynamic range; the two-channel section achieves even greater frequency response and dynamic range across the audio band. Both the six-channel and the two-channel sound images have unparalleled resolution and transparency. This cutting-edge technology brings a whole new listening experience to ìCome On In This House,î an album where veteran bluesman Junior Wells lays out the welcome mat with an acoustic session of fourteen favorites. He sings, blows harp and inspires the best from an array of guest guitar soloists - Tab Benoit, Corey Harris, Alvin ìYoungbloodî Hart, Sonny Landreth, Bob Margolin, John Mooney, Derek Trucks - with a rhythm section that includes drummer Herman Ernest III, pianist Jon Cleary and bassist Bob Sunda. In Wellsí gritty vocals, expert phrasing and brilliant harp performances on this recording, his timeless prowess as a bluesman still rings true, even after his passing. Born Amos Blakemore in Memphis in 1934, Wells first learned the rudiments of blues harp from Junior Parker. He moved to Chicago in 1946, where he joined Louis and David Myers to form the Three Deuces (which later became the Three Aces, then just the Aces when drummer Fred Below joined the trio in 1950). In 1952, Wells joined Muddy Watersí band, where he gained wider acclaim. He began a long-time association with Buddy Guy in 1958, and the pair cut the classic ìHoodoo Man Bluesî on Delmark in 1965. The album expanded Wellsí reputation beyond the Windy City to an audience of international proportions.Originally released on CD format in 1996, ìCome On In This Houseî takes its title from a tune that Wells recorded for the Chief label many years ago and hints at the nature of the albumís historic selections. Wells selected classic blues tunes by some of the best of the old masters - Robert Nighthawkís ìIím Gonna Move To Kansas City,î Tampa Redís ìKingfish Blues,î Bobby Charlesí ìWhy Are People Like That,î Sonny Boy Williamsonís ìTrust My Baby,î Arthur ìBig Boyî Crudupís ìThatís All Right,î Junior Parkerís ìMystery Train,î and more.Telarc currently has twenty titles in various genres - classical, jazz, contemporary jazz and blues - available in multi-channel (Hybrid) SACD. Approximately 36 titles will be available in the six ñchannel SACD format by June 2002. Visit the Telarc website, www.telarc.com, for the most updated information on our new SACD recordings.
