DIRECTV To Begin Distribution Of New Generation Access Cards

3-Apr-02

DIRECTVÆ, Inc., announced that it is providing its customers with a new generation DIRECTV System access card that will significantly enhance the security of the DIRECTV signal. DIRECTV will begin issuing the new access cards via mail this week. This is the third access card change for DIRECTV since it launched service nearly eight years ago and is part of a longstanding business plan to periodically introduce access cards. The DIRECTV System is designed on the concept of renewable security. This fourth-generation access card, which sets a new standard for signal security, is the most technologically sophisticated DIRECTV access card to date. This card is the result of a joint design effort by DIRECTV engineering and its conditional access system and access card developer and supplier, NDS Group plc. ""By developing a new generation access card that strengthens the DIRECTV System's security, we continue to take aggressive steps to curb piracy and protect our intellectual property as well as the interests of our customers, retailers and programmers,"" said Roxanne Austin, President and COO, DIRECTV, Inc. Customers will receive the new access cards with easy-to-follow card change instructions, and after they've been mailed a new card, can tune to a dedicated DIRECTV channel to view an on-screen, step-by-step demonstration on how to change out their cards and reactivate service via remote control. When the process is complete, residential customers are asked to discard their old access cards. Once they receive their new access cards in the mail, customers will have three weeks to activate their new card. During that time they will see periodic on-screen messages reminding them to make the switch. For more information, visit www.DIRECTV.com.
