AudioControl Takes Video To New Lengths

5-Apr-02

AudioControl has developed a simple, quality-focused solution to an increasingly common problem. The BVD-10 and the BVR-10 comprise a Cat 5 balanced line video distribution system that enables audio/video installers to send high quality composite, S-video, or component video, along with stereo audio signals up to 1000 feet using inexpensive, Cat 5 twisted-pair cabling. According to company President Tom Walker, the BVD-10 and BVR-10 offer a much-needed solution. ""It is becoming quite common for system designers and installers to extend video and audio signals over long distances. Traditionally, they've had few choices, and most of them have compromised performance. The BVD-10 and BVR-10 make it easy, affordable, and just about foolproof to run reference-grade signals wherever needed, throughout just about any system no matter how elaborate or far-flung."" The source-end driver, BVD-10, and the destination-end receiver, BVR-10, convert standard, line-level audio signals, along with two composite video or one S-video signal to high current balanced format for driving standard Category 5 or better structured cabling. A balanced signal distribution format is the universal standard in professional audio environments such as recording and broadcast studios, where zero tolerance for noise and hum is the norm. Because of its design, balanced transmission inherently rejects the vast majority of any hum, noise, or distortion introduced along the signal path. The BVD-10 accepts up to two RCA composite/component video or one S-video mini-DIN input, along with stereo audio RCA input, sending these to a standard Cat 5 RJ-45 output jack. The BVR-10 receives this input and converts them back to their original unbalanced formats. In the process, any added noise and hum through the balanced signals' common-mode rejection is canceled. The BVD-10 and BVR-10 also allow conversion of composite to S-video and vice versa. Along with their other installation-friendly features, the high video bandwidth performance of the BVD-10 and BVR-10 enable two units to be combined for creating a high-definition component video distribution system. Potential applications for these components are numerous. For high-performance multiroom systems, running balanced lines from the ""home"" system to remote rooms carries a significant advantage in real-world signal-to-noise performance, and thus in dynamic range. The system can also be employed to distribute signals within a single room's system, greatly reducing the size of the cable running from the equipment rack to the video projector. Balanced connection between an audio system and relatively distant sources, such as from a home theatre's DVD or DBS satellite signal from a centrally located receiver, is another advantageous use. The BVD-10 and BVR-10 are constructed using components and circuit designs derived from the company's professional audio and instrumentation designs. Sold separately and available April 2002, the BVD-10 and BVR-10 are backed by a five-year warranty. These new models join the BLD-10, BLR-10 and BLX-10 balanced audio components in the AudioControl Balanced Line Driver series. For more information, visit www.audiocontrol.com.
