CEA Celebrates Discovery's All High-Definition Channel Rollout

28-Jun-02

The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) celebrated the launch of Discovery Communications' all high-definition (HD) channel, HD Theater, and called on all cable companies to follow the lead of satellite, AT&T Broadband in Chicago, Cox Communications Inc., and Charter Communications Inc. in the delivery of compelling programming to HDTV consumers. CEA also encouraged the expansion of Discovery's partnerships to more markets across the country. ""HDTV consumers consistently have called for more content to view and hear on their phenomenal, crystal-clear televisions,"" said CEA President and CEO Gary Shapiro. ""By launching HD Theater, Discovery is responding to that demand. We hope this promising announcement will compel other cable companies and other cable markets to embrace HDTV. High-quality HDTV programming like Discovery's HD Theater is the added fuel necessary for a timely and successful analog-to-digital television (DTV) transition."" CEA projects that 2.1 million DTV products -- including integrated sets and displays -- will be sold in 2002, 4 million in 2003, 5.4 million in 2004, 8 million in 2005, and 10.5 million in 2006.
